Hey fellow [H] peoples. My dad needs a new computer, as his current computer is hacked to hell and back. Since I'm going to make myself a custom computer, I figured I should pratice by making my dad a computer :) Anyways, heres the laydown:

Comes to about 916$. I checked Dell, and they had a similar system for about ~1600, so my dads saving 700$ which he likes. Hes going to use it to pay bills/photo work, and run lots of programs at once, soo...

Now this is going to be my very first build. What kind of tools would I need? Should I get some thermal paste? Are all the parts compatable with each other? As much feedback as possable please, I'm a firstimer and need some confidence :) Thanks

Oh ya, whats are these "BIOS" and cmos and the like I hear about? "Reset yoru Cmos.." whats all that mean? that nessacary to build a computer? I'm no programmer by any means...
 
1) make != build
2) post the names of your components, not just links b/c no one wants to have to click 20 links just to see all your parts
 
Seems ok. I'd ditch the soundcard and go with onboard sound unless Dad's an audiophile. I'd ditch the expensive speakers for the same reason. No need for sound really except to hear the Windows "Bling!" every now and then.
 
Why does your dad need Audigy2 ZS Gamers Limited Edition sound card, onboard is fine for you dad. Also why does he need z-5300e THX certified speakers when regular 20-40 speakers will be okay for him. You could put the money saved to something else more useful.
 
lol. i have a feeling the sound card is snuck in there so that the kid can get the games :) . i agree with above - if it's for 'dad only' just use onboard sound, or possibly a turtle beach santa cruise (the audigy 2 gamer is way overboard), cheaper speakers, but a better mainboard (865pe based). you don't need a $57.00 seperate case and 430W power supply (though the one you picked is great). For the components you picked all you need is a good Antec with an included power supply like this
one here. and if you are going to game at all but want to save money consider a better GPU. you could get a much better video card if you drop down in speakers and the sound card (or use onboard).
 
Alright, I'll drop the sound card, and go with somethign cheaper. But I'll keep the speakers, as I need them :p This isn't going to be my rig. I'm making him a computer becaues this is pratice for when I made my computer.

I'm not a intel guy, so can someone give me soem links to some solid intel MoBos? Also, would that processor be compatable with 875/865

Guys, can you tell me some first timer mistakes? This is going to be my very first build, and I have no idea what kind of "special" tools I shoudl have. Screwdriver and thermal paste; that enough to make a computer?
 
You mentioned youre dads going to be paying bills online, so you'll want to make absolutely certain its 100% secure. firewall and full virus/spyware protection -> and its best to leave auto updates on. and convert him to firefox/tbird.

I say this for a reason, as Ive been working my local area doing general computer fixing and diagnosis, nearly every computer Ive found so far had some spyware sitting in the background, and often worse. Unfortunately a lot of people just dont know enough to watch out for this stuff.

What dell is this that sells a p4 2.4 and mx4000 with no monitor or speakers for 1600? For the average person, buying a pre-made computer can be much cheaper, especially with their deals.
 
I updated the post, and i forgot to change the dell compersion...meh. anyways, is this comptuer good to order?
 
looks like you're only really saving ~$200. But hey, that's $200 for you and less for DELL.

Priced a Dimension 4700 w/ P4 2.8E, 250GB drive instead of 200GB, Radeon X300 PCI-E video card.

Like I said, that's still about a $200 savings, so it's worth it in my opinion to build at this price point. Although Dell is throwing in a free printer, worth approximately $50 in my opinion.
