How pure does the distilled water need to be for water cooling?

Is it worth making it yourself?

I was planning on using a big pot with the lid upside down and collecting distilled water in a floating bowl. The only impuritys will be from the lid of the pot, the bowl and the container im going to store it in.

All were washed with tap water. There are a few drips in the bottle im going to store it in that i cant reach.

Will this be pure enuff?

Hi,

Not for nothing but distilled water is easy to get. Just go to the local grocer and down the cleaning products aisle there should be several gallons of Distilled Water on the shelf. (I know my local supermarkets stock distilled water by these areas.) You can also find the water at a good auto parts store as well. I understand where you are coming from making your own but this is one of those things in which is easy to come by.

I live in belfast and they dont have any :(. I just couldnt be bothered waiting for delivery.

A dehumidifier is the easiest way(water condensing on the coils has been distilled), but the water may pick up contaminants.

Any other method is a bit too...backyard for my liking. Yeah, you could use a pressure-cooker, solder, and copper pipe, but it's not the safest looking thing in the world.

Edit; your idea of using a lid with a bowl floating isn't that bad of an idea, but it will probably take a while.

The water should be pure because if it isn't then "stuff"(whatever is in the water) will precipitate out in your cooling loop. In reality, it probably won't make a difference. Plenty of people have run their cars for hundreds of thousands of miles who never knew any better than to just use water from a hose. I doubt any computer water cooling system will see the same amount of use before it's torn apart and rebuilt.
