Making custom lenght (shorter) cables?

Guys,

I'd like to make sure i understand the right procedure for making custom length cables, shortening them that is? This mainly applies to 3 pin fan & 4 pin molex cables. I'm doing a build now w/ some mods & would like to know.

I'm guessing it should go smth like this:

1. Cut out the section of the wire that needs to be removed.

2. Strip the wire at the tips on both ends exposing bare wire

3. Tie the bare wires together.

4. Tape em w/ electrical tape.

I dont know if this will do or there needs to be some soldering done in step 3.

I would solder them and then cover with heat shrink tubing to get a tidy look (after exposing to heat). I'm assuming you have all of this clear of your mobo and stuff like that. This works well on the desktop.

So you are saying solder em instead of tying em together & using heatshrink instead of tape, right? Other steps are correct i take it.

Yep, all this will be done away from the mobo, out of case.

buy new pins

remove old pins from sockets
cut wire to desired length
strip insulation back
crimp/solder new pins on
push new pins into sockets

This gives you the cleanest look.

Thnx for responding! :)

May i ask what do the pins have to do w/ this? I'm assuming you are referring to 3 pin & 4 pin molex pins. I'll be working w/ them too, i'll be swapping plastic 3 & 4 connector housings w/ colored ones but i was planning to leave existing pins where they are & just put new connectors on. But i dont understand what do pins have to do w/ soldering/tying bare wires together. You must exuse me, i'm fairly new to this type of mod.

I was saying to skip splicing the wires just cut off however much wire you don't want. Then attach new pins to what's left. It gives you a cleaner look than having a splice covered by heatshrink mid wire.

You can use your original method (but with soldered connections rather than tied) and just put braided sleeving over the entire cable to the connector, so you won't see the heat shrink tubing. You can also put additional heat shrink tubing up right near the connector, so you'll see none of those multicolored wires whatsoever. That would be the cleanest look!

I like not bothering with pins/connectors if I don't have to.

OK, i think i understand what you mean. You are just going for the cleanest look here. I dont think it will be an issue for me though. You see, i'll be sleeving all the cables w/ techflex so it will be very clean, the heatshrink covering the part where the wire was cut shouldnt be visible in this case. Besides i dont think i even know how to solder new pins, my soldering skills are very basic, lol

EDIT: Right AQ_OC, that is my intention. I should've said that in the OP.

Solder is not needed. A good quality buttsplice, even non-insulated, is a perfectly good connection. Id go with new pins, as its the best solution. If you decide to splice, get non-insulated butt splices, and use a small piece of heatshrink over each splice, before looming them.
