Making a wood computer case.

I have to make a grade 8 Tec-ED project out of wood. So I want ot make a computer case? Any tips? And If you are thinking about fire... I will line it with somehting. But it has to be wood. ANyway any layouts? I was thinking about mimicing the Enermax CS 718 Max Flow case. Its a cool concept but I don't know how good my version would be becasue it is wood and it is a 13 year old student. I can steal a mobo try form one of my cases or mount it on a piece of wood. The only thing is mounting the optical drives. Does nayopne have an Ideas or tips?
 
Would your teach get mad abot suing some lexan/acrylic to make optical / hdd mounts? Baiscly measure it all out, then heat up a line where you want to bend the plastic and SLOWLY bend it to a 90* angle. pretty simple for that.

BTW< how good it looks all depends on how much time, effort, and carefullness you put into it. Also, I wish my woodshop teacher in 8th grade woulda been cool enough to let us do what we wanted... I had to make a spice rack and do a bunch of hand drafting....

My cousin got to make a Grandfather Clock. :mad:

But hey, I still have it and it got me hooked on woodworking, so I guess it worked. :D
 
You may get some ideas from this pic, it terms of mounting optical drives:

I used ash for the ends of the mounting block with hardboard (same stuff clipboard are made from). Although it's resting on another board there, you could do somethink along the same lines. You could also just make it like small shelves, the 5.25" slots don't HAVE to be directly on top of each other.
 
I'm starting to fabricate a wooden case for an HTPC next week. If I come along any good tips I'll pass them on.
 
Well our teacher says we shoudld stick to boxes shelves and clocks. But a case is like a box. But I can go in at lunch and work on it. I am going to spend sooo much time on it. He won't say if our projects are approved to next class but i'm sure he will approve it. I just have to lay out EVERYTHING every single step with high detail and he will let me.
 
I think you are overthinking the difficulty of replicating the structure in wood. Approach it as if you are constucting bookshelves. Look at it in chuncks instead of as a whole.

i've been thinking about building a wood case in the same essential layout as a lian-li pc-61, except just making it flipped into WTX standard.
 
But is it a good idea to put the mobo like that instead of a normal position?

It doesn't hurt it. Helping is determined where your intake and exhaust fans are. WTX (flipping a standard ATX board upside down) is mimicing the upcoming BTX style of motherboards. Where the CPU will be located closer to the bottom of the case and force you to open your case from the right-hand side as opposed to the left-hand side you do today.
