can i "7 volt" mod my vantec so it gets 7Volts going thru, and i can asjust lower from there????so i can go from like 1V to 7V??? i wanna have my fants at 7V all the time, but lower when i am studying...plz lmk if any one has done this.. i am not an electronics major or anything so i have no clue! thanks, lmk!

wire them in series to variable resistors so when resistance is near 0 it will be full 7 volts and mount those into an 5.25" or 3.5" bay cover. Be carefull tho, fans have a minimum startup voltage. (red and yellow on molex is 7v)

well of course you can do that, but the question is, will the fans actually spin?

Below 5-7v many fans will not spin at start up, some will spin after start up at 5-7v+ then dropping it lower, and others will not spin at all, period.

ok, i was just making sure it didnt need the 7 volt for anythign and that it wouldnt damage the unit by doing that :)

I guarantee it won't work much below 5v, if at all. Many fans won't start at low voltages, as somebody else noted.

Like has been said, many times 7v is the *minimum* for 12v fans. If you were to get fans designed to run at 5v, then you'd have some lower voltage headroom, but that isn't really the point here. The point is that you want quite fans... so get some really quite fans! If Vantec Steaths aren't cutting it, then there are some even quieter fans that you can find, I know directron has them
