Making a socket mounted HSF hole mounted?

My initial thought was to drill holes in the side of the HSF's baseplate, tap and use them to attach brackets or something to the side.

Any other ideas?
 
That sounds like a reasonable idea. Just make sure the brackets are beefy. Then you'll just need some long bolts, nylon nuts, and springs.
 
The springs are generally used to make sure you place just the right amount of tension on the cpu. If you tighten it too much, the mobo and cpu could be damaged. If you don't have any, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just be careful when you're mounting the hs. Also, metal nuts can be used if you've got a non-conductive backing plate between them and the mobo.
 
Don't worry, I'm not going to short out anything. I'll place either cardboard or plastic between the PCB and any metal parts I use :)
