making a Server questions

Thinking about making a server for my home network from a parted out "old" system. I still have case, PSU(antec 430), mobo(8RDA+), CPU(athlon 1600+ AGOIA stepping), HSF, serval HD's, CD roms.

thinking of making it into file server / internet gateway?(put a firwall on it) maybe a game server and /or FTP-webpage-mail server.
What do you guys think? What parts do I still need? Whats most important? What programs? Will W2K work or will I need to by XP/XP PRO? How hard would it be to set up? What are some good sites to look at for info?
Sorry for all the questions but I just can't stand having all these parts laying around not being used(no I will not give it to you :D )

well you need memory, not suure if you just neglected to mention if you had any tho. some sort of dirt cheap graphics card will also be necessary, but the performance of it doesn't really matter.

As for operating systems i recommend linux, but if you have no experience with it then going with w2k or xp might be a better choice. either will work for your purpose, however, xp pro apparently has bit more 'hand holding' factor to it (guides, step by step wizards, etc. it was built more with the home network in mind than the network administrator).
 
I need to get ram. what kind and how much? pc3200 512, 1gig, duel channel? Is memory the most important thing?
 
PC3200 is overkill for a 1600+, the FSB isn't high enough to use that (unless you have it way overclocked). Don't go for speed, go for stability... I'd probably get 512 of Crucial RAM to start out with, I doubt you'd need more than that. You can always upgrade later if you need... Dual channel doesn't matter really...

I agree with Linux, but that can be quite a lot for someone to bite into if they haven't used it much before, especially for a server. So, I'd stick with Win2K. It would make a good server, plus you already own it and are comfortable using it, so that's a major plus.

Try to keep in mind that with servers, stability matters much more than speed... I'd try to keep from overclocking it, unless it can run Prime95 for days and temps aren't any higher than stock...

As for being a firewall/gateway, you'll need two respectable 10/100 NICs. I recommend Intel Pro 100s or 3com 3c905x cards, they're great to work with. I don't have any experience using windows for this purpose, only Linux, so I can't help you with software.
