My friends and I lately have been getting together and just having a good time playing our guitars, drums, trumpets and so on...

I saw in our school's newspaper room that they had Macs so I went in with a friend and he introduced me to Garageband. I had to have it. You could record different tracks separately and combine them all into a song... etc.

Here is my dillemma.





I could go with a PC (Current one)

Or, I could go with a Mac mini

I can't choose what one to pick. In the end, the PC would probably be 200 bucks cheaper than the Mac option, because I already have most of the PC

The chaintech card isn't a recording card. You want a decent ecording card, lik the Emu 0404.

I'd like to have XLR inputs for my Shure SM57 microphone. I saw one on newegg for like 230 bucks with XLR, but that's a little out of my budget.
 
For a more traditional PCI card, the ruskies over at DigitLife liked the Juli@. It has balanced 1/4" outputs, which I'm pretty sure can be adapted to be XLR, which is also a balanced interconnect.

Something like Edirol's UA-25 might suit your budget as well. Around $240, depending where you get it. Adapting the Juli@ would involve adding a 48v phantom power if you need it for condenser mikes. The Josephson C42 is my suggestion for one, btw. Solid mic, gives a good acoustic sound. About $430.

I'd tend to go with PC, since you don't have to learn a whole new interface (file management, all that) for that. If you can get a student version of cubase, that would probably be the best option. It's expensive, but "buy it nice or buy it twice".

I know I'm recommending expensive stuff, but I've had no experience with sub-$100 type stuff. A friend of mine got $1500 worth of recording stuff for christmas a few years back, and I get to play with it.
