Making a 35W E4300

http://www.behardware.com/articles/652-2/intel-core-2-duo-e4300.html got me thinking. Dual Prime 95 isn't the most stressful task the CPU can do, but it's a pretty heavy load. BEHardware measured the E4300 consuming 42W on that task.

It shouldn't take much lower voltage to bring power consumption down to 35W with the same load: from 1.325v to 1.225v @ 1.8GHz should be close to 35W. Below that probably requires modifying the VID pins to select a lower voltage. Bringing the consumption down to 25W needs ~1.025v.

Maybe I should just buy a mobile CPU and board instead. I want to make a HT/gaming PC to connect to my HDTV that can be cooled with a single quiet fan for the whole system, the smaller the form factor the better. There are lower power CPUs but I want something with a decent amount of processing power.

Any thoughts?
 
Do some research on motherboards. There are ones available that can run an E4300 at 1.0 volt or less. One guy on the [H] forum was doing some testing the other day with his locked in the bios at 200 x 6 = 1200 MHz down at 0.7 volts. I'll post a link if I can remember where I read that.
 
They are bound to have to update the chipsets on mobile sometime soon. I don't think the 945GM is gonna be the next 865.
