make my own spdif connector?

Anybody here know of any good guides on how to make a spidif connector? I've found a few but they were subpar at best.

I want ot make my own because my motherboard has a spdif header on it. And i have now way to use it, Shuttle has a daughter card for it. But i'm sure it's over priced. All i want is spdif out.

Will anybody be able to give me the information as to what type of connector i need ot buy and how to wire it. I have the pin out digram inside the manual. The manual states that there are two grounds, a +12V, +5V, spdif in, and spdif out pins. I just need to know which ones i need to use for just spdif output.

I assume its only 3, the spdif-out pin, a ground pin , but do i use the +5V or +12V pin for the power?

no.. phono is for analouge, im not really sure how you would go about doing this, i would just go ahead and get teh daughter card as i wouldnt trust myself sautering a coaxial connector to my board....
 
That's what i thought too in the begining but then i found this . website

Now i'm tempted to try because it seems easy and 3.99 is alot less than say spedning $25 - $40 for a card that i can only get from Shuttle. I already have a soldering iron and some spare wire.

I think electricity is electricity it just matters if you have the proper equipment to decode the signal that is being sent. Can anyone back me up on this?
 
I have that shuttle card, you can have it for 10 bucks if you want it. PM me if you're interested. I don't use it.
 
Disregard the +12 and +5 volt pins and connect the spdif out to the center pin an a standard pannel mount rca jack..connect the ground to the "ring" on the same jack and try it.
You really dont even need to connect the ground cause it will ground to the case but it's good practice.

There is a catch though.... Some of those add-on cards have both optical and coax capabilities which means they usually have a convertor that handles the translation for the coax jack.

Thank you both. I might swing by radio shack tonight and try to make my own ouput. However, if i can't get it to work for whatever reason. I will buy the card for $10. I really just didn't want to purchase a new soundcard because all i need is a way to pass a digital signal along to my reciever.
