I modded a DVD+-RW drive so that you can see the cd inside it spinning and I put 2 blue leds in it. I think it looks good but with my case being all closed up I can't see it. I would like to know if anyone has any infomation or wiring diagram that I could use to make this drive external? I would like to make a IDE to USB adapter so I can plug my drive in outside of the case. Any help is greatly apreciated

I don't want to buy anything I would rather make it if possible. I have made my own cat5 crossover cables from regular cat5 cables, also made an xbox to usb adaptor. Now I need to make an IDE to USB adapter and am not sure how so I need a wiring diagram for one.

well, you really can't make your own. enclosures are basically an IDE controller with a bridge that translates the IDE signals into USB signals for transmission, and USB signal into IDE signals for receiving. Then there's the USB interface logic that ultimately communicates with the O/S and tells what it it is and it's capable of, Unless you know how to engineer such a beast, and have a fab to make it with, you'll have to buy an enclosure.

What you could do is rip the circuit board in side the enclusure and build a new one around it that suits you better.

But a crossover cable for ethernet (being that it just moves signal from one set of pins to another) is much much simper than making a USB to IDE adapter. And a Xbox controller is already electrically USB, MS just slapped an odd connector on it.

Well, it really is not that hard:
Look at some datasheets here select the appropriate USB 2.0 to ATAPI bridge chip (I think it's the AT2 or so) and then order one. Get some breadboard, a build a "reference board" implementation. Download the driver from cypress and hope it works.

spend the $15-20 on getting a completely made, debugged version, which is likely much cheaper than wasting hours of this. Trust me, there is a major difference between "making a crossover cable" and "building a USB device". I have done both, I know.
