majoring in photography?

i've already had a few jobs involving photography...but i want to know if this is a solid choice as a major or should i go into something else(probobly english). has anyone here majored in photography and can help me decide what to do? i'm not really sure what to do after college...panic!
 
well, with photography theres a super slim chance you will get to date a swimsuit model. As an english major, id guess theres no chance.

What are you thinking of doing with the english degree?
 
i already got the best girl in the world, so i'm not worried about that...hah

with the english degree i'd like to go into editing and writing, if that doesn't work out, english teacher.
 
Well, from a practicality standpoint there will probably be more jobs available for english majors than photography majors (although i could be wrong).

You will also want to consider how good the departments are. If the english dept is phenomenal and the photography one is horrible, it may not be worth your money for photography, etc.


While not a double major, you might try minoring in the other field, or just taking a few classes, if you can afford it.
 
The bottom line is that an editor doesnt give a crap what degree you have. If your photographs are good then he'll use them and it doesnt matter what peice of paper you'll have in your hand.

This isnt to say you wouldn't leave school with a larger knowledge of photography, but really it's most likely something you can teach yourself.

I'm pretty much going the same route you are, i'm a fresh. in college and taking a B&W photography class, but i'm not going to lie to myself and assume i can easily go make a decent living off of photography alone.

I work two other jobs and still manage to make about $200 a month from photography.

the college i would go to for photo and english is great for both, and not going to college is not an option, the 'rents and girlfriend just won't get it...so that's that.

tq are you majoring in photo or.??

I havnt chosen a major yet but it's either going to be history or english.
 
as for a photo major. I think it can be a waste of time and money. If you spend time learning on your own you could probably get a lot more done. Get a degree in something that can really help you get a job.

thats just my 2 cents.

I think it's important to point out that getting a degree in photography could very well get you a job if your any good at it. But it's important that you realize that your just as likely to get that job if you didnt get the degree if you take the time (and save the money) to learn on your own.

ok well then I rephrase my state to these facts.

photog degree would not aid more in getting a job in that field then just learning your shit and getting a good portfolio.
that better?

I mean its possible it could help.... but... people are looking for good photogs ... not photogs with degrees... and most its prereq to get in door.
