First, specs:
Abit IC7 mobo
Pentium 4 2.4c with a Zalman CNPS-AlCu HSF
2x512MB PC3200 Corsair XMS
ATI Radeon 9700 NP
WD 80 GB SE
All in a nice antec case/PSU with 2 120mm fans running full power

Every since I built my computer last fall I've always been slightly unstable, nothing that every worried me too greatly. After extended periods of time or during gaming it would randomly reboot and has done that since I've had it. Something I can deal with... This has happened while I ran it at 3.0 ghz (for a few months), 2.8 ghz (for a few more), and for the last month at 2.4 ghz. More recently, in the past few months, I've had trouble with the computer starting, where it will simply boot into the BIOS check screen halfway, right to "Processor: " then it will just hang, and usually one to two restarts will remedy that. Today the same thing happened, but after several restarts it still wasn't going. At one of the restarts a message appeared after it had identified processor, IDE drives, etc. It said something like "CPU not functional. Check CPU softmenu". So I go into the BIOS and "load fail safe defaults". Reboot and still no go. I then unplug and take out one of my memory sticks. Still nothing. Next I clearthe CMOS and realize I should try clocking it down and lo and behold this works. So now I'm running at 1.99 ghz with no apparent problems. What the deuce is going on here?

PART 2: I put back in the 512 stick I had previously taken out, the computer boots fine but when I get into windows the internet doesn't work. I start throwing things and try to remedy the situation with network settings. Neither the throwing things or the network settings work. So I decide to pull back out the 512 stick and boom, internet works again. I then want to relieve myself of the stress so I fire up Battlefield: Vietnam and it runs like ass with 400mhz and 512mb less power. I hit escape to change settings and it hangs. I reboot, turn up clock to 2.4ghz, get into windows... NO INTERNET! So here I am 2ghz and 512mb RAM. I'm seriously worried here...
 
onboard lan is shot?
but u said ur getting cpu errors, maybe mobo needs to be rma'd

i'm not using onboard LAN, a realtek thing. and it works fine when i don't run higher clock or with all of my ram.
 
I'd be guessing there is some issue with the mobo.

Your rig seems like it would be pretty stable. OF course you mentioned it was giving you some stability issues when you first built it. I'm betting that this problem had existed since day one but is starting to get worse.
 
omegads, now my sound doesn't work. i boot up and popup boxes come up and a delayed popup sound then comes. in winamp i play music for 5 minutes and all of the sudden in the middle of a song it just stops playing. i'll hit play but the progress bar doesn't move. the same happens in Battlefiedl vietnam, sound for a few minutes then gone. this seems like a processor problem but i don't know, what the fuck is going on!?
