major issues with installing drivers on 4770

So I've come to figure out through process of elimination that the XFX 4770 in my friend's setup that I just put together is causing my problems with the build...

Whenever I try to install new drivers for the card it makes it so the system crashes after the windows startup screen. The only drivers that work are the ones that comes with th CD, if I use the ones off of the their newest drivers via their online system it will cause the system to fail...

Any ideas? This is a fresh, brand new build.


Edit:Correction, now even those drivers don't work. Could the card be bad? How would I be able to tell?

a little more info...

I went into my devices, and right clicked it so it would pull up the drivers and had it update the drivers. It immediately recognized it as a 4770. Then it installed the new drivers and upon reboot it does the same old go to starting windows then blackscreen and turns off after 30 seconds or so...

I'm lost :(
 
I feel like I'm having a conversation with myself...

Anyways, it just got weirder. I installed the 3850 from my rig to see if it was the PCIE slot or the GPU. The 3850 worked... So I put the 4770 and fired it back up. Now it works, but it's showing up as the graphics scores only a 5.6 on the WEI, I know it was above 6 with the right drivers.

This is so weird... Do I install the correct drivers or leave it? This blows, I need some input


EDIT: I just tried updating drivers and it caused it to crash again. Now it's back to not recognizing the card. WTF???

Try seating the card in the primary pci slot and deleting the current Ati dirvers and do a clean install.

Definitely sounds like a driver problem.

Done, it'll go into windows then, and once I install the drivers and restart the computer I get the same issue. This did not happen with the 3850, the computer rebooted and was good to go. The big anomaly was that when I put the 4770 back in and didn't change the drivers it worked somewhat (not optimally, but it worked).

I'm super confused right now... tried also installing the 3XXX drivers in case that would solve the problem, no dice.

I have those same cards and been getting almost same type of crashes only mine will let me into windows and browse stuff untill i start a game it will let me play about 15-20mins and then bam bsods and black screen will occur.
Any can help us out would be great, or maybe a link to an official fix? I've read so far prob 100's of threads to fix my crashing issue with the 4770 and non of them have worked.

What are the specs of your friends rig btw?
from what im thinking and from all the readings i've done I've come to think its the card or drivers at this point since before I installed a hd 4770 I had a hd 3850 which worked flawlessly in my same system.
These days there are tons of different motherboards and different kinds of hardware there maybe incompatibility issues with some folks since I know some are enjoying thery're 4770s.
With this particular model ( HD 4770) there is 50/50 chance for anyone having a compatibility issues.

I've read this on another forum dont know if its true but you can give it a try.

Wooo hoo! Fingers crossed I've finally fixed it!!

After a year roughly of the dreaded atikmdag and trying EVERYTHING under the sun I think something has worked..

I was getting freezes during games only.. tried upgrading to windows 7, ram, aero, basically every little trick out there.. was just about to buy a new video card when I got a massive crash..
(blue screen of death - BSOD) local pc repair could suggest nothing more than a complete hard drive format and fresh install of win 7..

I did this not expecting it to fix atikmdag, just fix BSOD.. had already done this twice but this time decided to steer completely clear of ATI patches and especially CCC..

so essentially I have only the driver updates that win 7 auto finds...
and whatdya know... seems "touchwood" prob has been solved...

maybe I'll work up the courage to do the latest video card driver update WITHOUT CCC (driver only patch) but for now after so much frustration, I am not touching a thing....

Hope this helps some people..
