Major HD Problem

Hey folks, I'm experiencing a major problem with one of my HDs.

I was running a game where suddenly it jumped back to desktop and freezed my computer. Now generally a hard reset would solve the problem, but here when I had to reset the computer, Windows was no longer booting up. So I deleted windows, installed it on another HD and tried to scandisk the partition where the freeze had occured. The scan took an EXTREMELY long time (almost 10 hours for a 80GB partition), whereupon it got to 75% on the 4th stage and just froze there for hours on end until the computer was restarted and the scan was restarted once again, not correcting any possible errors.

At this point I tried something else, I ran chkdsk which got stuck again on 75% on stage 4, but eventually zipped directly from 75% to 100% at the end telling me there was one or more errors in the disk.

At this point I'm kinda stumped. So, several questions:

1. How can I find out exactly how extensive are the errors on the disk? I need something that can tell me which sectors are bad or corrupted. Scandisk isn't working at this point and I don't want to waste another 10-15 hours for a worthless scan which will neither find the errors nor correct them.

2. How can I correct the errors on the disk, if at all possible. The disk has several things which in hindsight, of course, are important to me so I'd like to know what data I can salvage, if any.

3. If one partition is badly corrupted, can the corruption spill out to other partitions of the disk?

There are still several things which I want to try, but I want to find out more about my problem before I take any chances and thus possibly losing valuable data.

I'll appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.
