Major Hard Drive problem :(

When I woke up, my hard drive was spinning up and down and up and down, every 1.5 seconds. I have no idea how long it had been doing that, could have been up to 16 hours. The IDE indicator was flickering, not like when you access data, but like when it just isnt right. I opened my case and yanked out the power cable to my WD400 (I had downloads going, not to that harddrive though). As it was spinning up and down, and i'm pretty sure that IDE drives SHOULD NOT do that, I just pulled its power. The Y-adapter for power that I was using was broken, not all the way, but it would make contact, then not make contact repeatedly. I'm wondering, should I just take everything off of that hard drive and pawn it off to someone i really dont like much or should I trust it because that didn;t do any damage?

:tear: that drive cost me $170 CAD like 4 years ago

EDIT: What should I do

option:

1) Keep the drive, because this situation couldn't have damaged the Hard Drive.
2) Pawn it to someone for cheap.

If you can grab the data from the drive of course.

I'm unclear if that drive was attached to the bad "Y" cable or not.

Save your data, reformat and let it run a few days properly connected and see what it does.

Hot plugging a molex connector can be very bad news, and the drive may be toast now. With that said, I'd back up any data on it, do a zero format to check for bad sectors and SMART errors using the WD Utilities, and try it again in your system and see if the problems recur. If they do, get rid of the drive. Even if they don't, you have no justification for trusting the drive anymore. I'd plan on buying a new one soon.
