Maingear Prelude Evaluation @ [H]

Hello,

I'm a female gamer (yes there's a few of us :p ) and I'd like to relate my experience with Maingear.

First of all let me say I'd been saving quite awhile for a new system. My last 2 puters were Alienware, and I've been VERY happy with them, but, after reading this great review, I thought I'd give Maingear a try (and get a little more puter for my buck). I called them Wednesday evening at 8:30 ( their website says that they are open til nine - really they are open until 8, but I happened to catch a fellow named Raphael who was working late). He was very helpful; I told him I was a pretty hardcore gamer, PvPed a lot, and needed a fast system on about a 4000$ (system only no monitor or speakers) budget. He helped me pick the Athlon 64 X2-4600 processor, Zalman cooler, 2 Gbites of RAM, the Western digital250 GB drive with 16MB RAM,an NVIDIA 7800 GTX 512MB PCLe, Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatality FPS and DVD dual layer drive as well as a regular dvd drive. I appreciated his help and the fact that he didn't try and steer me to more machine than I needed. He also agreed to include free shipping, and later, after the order was completed, also included free Norton anti virus software. I was in heaven. He explained to me how to process my order and include the order number with the info, as well as the fact that he was throwing in virus protection and free shipping. I mentioned to him that I'd want the machine shipped to my dad's office because I didn't think home delivery would be secure. Since this address differed from my billing address on my credit card, I told him I'd make sure I changed the address with the bank to make the sale smooth. After we hung up - I processed my order exactly as he directed. (my order number was 011806W57)

Well, the next day I rushed through work so that I could get to the bank to make the address change. I even bragged about my new machine to my co-workers! I was so excited! I was expecting their confirmation call but hadn't received it by late afternoon so I called them. Apparently I'd mis-typed my phone number as beginning with 253 and not 255 (my old number was 253), and they reached a wrong number. No problem, my fault not theirs, BUT then I was told they didn’t have record of the order I placed just the night before! Luckily Raphael was there and we reconfigured my system - BUT guess what? The video card I'd ordered for 599 dollars was now 699! I of course said that this was NOT the price that I'd initially ordered the system at, and that I felt I should receive the price I was quoted initially. Raphael then went into some explanation that they were hard to get, and I WAS after all getting free shipping AND free Norton antivirus - this of course had NOTHING to do with the fact that I'd ordered it at ONE price (an order that they claimed they didn’t have), and now was being asked to PAY another price!! I was persistent (which I should NOT have had to be - I was quoted a price and I should be **given** that price without rationalization on their part). (And, actually I ended up "making a deal" to get the ORIGINAL price I was quoted - I told them I didn't need the mouse and keyboard)

After working through that little faux paux, I then read them my credit card (MasterCard Debit) - strangely, they then asked for the toll free number on the back of my card. Apparently then they called this number (which is NOT a merchant number, but one for the card holder's personal use) and were told that the card wasn't valid (didn't exist or something to that extent). I was mortified, and called the card company myself. I explained to them the situation and asked them to call Maingear and verify that the card was indeed valid and ready to go. The operator left for some time, returned, and told me everything was in order.

I of course assumed that she had called Maingear to verify my card was valid. When I called them back however, they informed me that no one had called. Of course, by this time I was extremely irate that I had a valid card, was trying to spend almost FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS, and Maingear was telling me a card I KNEW was valid - was not! Again we confirmed the card numbers; they called my bank again, and claimed they were told the card didn’t exist/couldnt be processed - whatever)

Having been a merchant myself - I STILL didn't understand why they were calling the number listed on my card (which won't share account info to non card holders) - and NOT the merchant phone line - but whatever.

I called my bank AGAIN and spoke to a fellow named Jabson Stanley. (1-800-975-HSBC. )He explained to me that NO ONE had attempted to use my card (meaning Maingear hadnt even tried to CHARGE the card, they hadn't actually RECIEVED a "invalid card error" because they didn't even attempt to USE the card), and that NO ONE would give any person info on my card (except with conference call) using the phone number I gave Maingear (the one they requested, the one the back of my card) - there is specific merchant number used for these issues. I was in shock - playing he said she said, and by this time madder than HELL, but thought I'd try Maingear one more time.

At this point I called Maingear AGAIN, and asked for the owner and was handed to Wallace Santos. I explained to him that the phone number listed on the back of my card wouldn't give any account info to him that we needed a conference call in order to verify my account. I don't HAVE conference call and of course neither did THEY (which is kind of strange to me that THEY need conference call but expect the person wanting to spend a few thousand DOLLARS with them to have it instead of having it themselves) so, the bottom line is I was SOL and unable to SPEND my hard earned nearly FOUR THOUSAND BUCKS on a computer that I wanted very much.

Also, interestingly, by this point (again, I’m not going to claim I was all sunshine and puppies I was ripping my hair out with frustration - of course the fact that I'd had some heavy duty dental work that afternoon didn't help either) my wait time for my computer suddenly increased to 30+ days (from about 9 days to 2 weeks the night before)

Needless to say my desire to own one of their computers was mitigated by these ridiculous goings on. . I STILL cannot believe my experience. NEVER have I had such a problem trying to spend four thousand dollars!

It was funny. I'd told Raphael the night before that I was buying the computer based on this review. He told me it had generated quite a bit of business. Seems like it's enough business for them to brush off a potential (good) customer.

So - anyway, I still am in need of of a good rig. Does anyone know of any other dependable companies who won't make me work so hard to buy their product?

Michelle Belgard

man....talk about a screw job...

if someone orders a 4000 dollar computer i think i'd remember, especially if it was later in the day

you could alway send half to me

:D :D

pc club are solid.. will get to about 3.4k+sh/h with most of your items (no xfi)
alienware is also solid as you've seen but a little pricier for the config you want 3.8k+s/h

That's strange, every company we've bought a computer from has been able to call the 1-800 number on the back of our credit card to verify the purchase if they needed to...

That's strange... I buy products online all the time. I have *never* been asked for the number on the back of my card. There is a specific merchant number that they can call if a card is invalid. (they will get an error message with a code as to why the card was declined, and there's a number to call to investigate further).

I'd be more than happy to conference call with you and my bank to verify that the funds are available -(if you have conference call that is - I don't).

Hi Shig,

Ya.. I'm still in a state of shock over the whole thing, and very disappointed that I didn't get the computer I was so looking forward to. I'll look into pc club- thanks !!! But I do have my heart set on that xfi (it's the audiophile in me!)

I'm not doubting you at all, I'm just saying I buy like 5 PCs a month and the 1-800 number on the back of our card has been used by multiple companies to verify information if they need it...

Yea more and more companies are asking for that number now. Hell I think newegg has done it for a while now.

well i was wondering if the xfi mattered... but you could alway buy it seperate and add on for cheaper if your not afraid if cracking it open to adding it on

X-fi's on newegg

never had any problem with the newegg

just to reaffirm they do ask for the 1-800 on newegg

Hi Michelle - welcome to the forums.

The 1-800 number on the back of any credit card is expressly for use in verifying account information, whether by yourself or the merchant you're trying to purchase from. The way the merchant does it is by giving the bank/institution a confirmation code.

Something you might want to check into is the maximum amount that you can charge on your debit card. Nearly all banks put a limit on one-time expenditures regardless of your account balance - mine does (Wells Fargo). 4 grand might be over your limit, which is why the transaction might be getting blocked. Sorry to hear about your troubles, though.

Michelle,

Wow- that is quite a story there.... maybe Maingear can't handle the volume of customers lately, but what happened to you would make me quite insane! What a friggin' fiasco!

You might want to check out Velocity Micro computers as well- they are a bit more pricey, but have a great rep. Check out the [H] Reviews . Chris says a new review is coming... he alluded to the fact that they have fixed some of the problems previously encountered.

Best of luck with your new purchase!

Cheers!

Thanks for the welcome : )

As for the 800 number being for anyone - according to the rep *I* spoke to, they wouldn't release any info without a three way conference call. (which, as I stated, I don't have - or, if I do, don't know how to use).

I know for a FACT that there is a designated merchant number that a seller can call if they attempt to make a transaction, but it fails. There are designated codes for each type of failure, i.e. insufficient funds, exceeded daily limit, need customer authorization (which has happened to me before when I purchase something out of my usual spending pattern - for example when I've traveled to California and made purchases there).

This had nothing to do with spending limits, balance problems, or late payments. And according to that rep NO (read - none, nada, zip, zilch,) attempt was made to even use my card. If they had - it would have gone through without a problem.

Thanks for the tip Kilgore! I did a search and read up on the Velocity systems - they looked good, but one of the reviews mentioned Overdrive computers and, after reading their site decided upon this system:

Video Adapter : (1) [nVidia] GeForce 7800 GTX 512 MB HyperClocked
Disk Array 1 | Hard Disk Drive(s) : 074GB SATA 10,000 RPM [Western Digital]
Processor(s) : [AMD] Athlon 64 FX-57 HyperClocked from 2800MHz to 3000MHz+
Motherboard : [Asus] A8N-SLI Premium nFORCE 4 Ultra SLI Motherboard
System Memory (RAM) : 2GB DDR
Operating System : [Microsoft] Windows XP (Professional)
Hot-Swap and Removable Hard Disk Drive Trays 1 : (1 Drive) Removable SATA Hard Drive Cage [Kingwin]
CD/DVD Disk Drive 1 : [Sony] 16X Dual Layer DVD Burner 52X CD Burner
CD/DVD Disk Drive 2 : [Sony] 52X CD Burner 16X DVD Reader
Floppy/Flash Drive 1 : [Mitsumi] 13-in-1 Floppy and Flash Media Reader (1.44MB) (3.5)
Sound Adapter : [Creative Labs] Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty FPS

It's a little more than I wanted to spend initially - but well worth it! Not only did I get a faster system, the ship date is less than 2 weeks AND I didn't have to BEG the company to take my money!

Best,

Michelle

Firstly, I would like to thank you for the opportunity to educate the readers here about our strict policies and endeavors to keep our customers safe and protected from fraud. I will address each portion of your post so as to explain the entire situation as simply as possible.

You called at 8:30 p.m. EST even though our phone system states that we’re open until 8 p.m. EST. This is neither here nor there but like I said I’d address every part of your post. Raphael picked up the call because regardless that we’re closed we always take care of our customers. Raphael and I were the only ones left in the building, because we don’t like to leave work unfinished and we still had 2 pc’s to get done.

You wanted to purchase a much more expensive PC than you had ended up with. Raphael helped you make the right component decisions for your needs and never did he try to push you to a more expensive purchase. Here at Maingear we help you get exactly what you need with room to grow on top of that. He didn’t try to finalize the purchase with you either, he left it to you to decide what you were going to do. You stated that you were filling out the configuration on your end over the web. Raphael was simply guiding you through it. The ‘order #’ that you mentioned: 011806W57, was in fact not an order #, but a promotional code that Raphael gave you so that you were eligible to get free shipping and a free anti-virus which was approved by me that night. He specifically told you to write that # under the comments section toward the end of the purchasing process and you expressly stated that you understood those instructions.

Raphael called her, and a gentleman picked up and said that there was no Michelle at that particular household. Strange as that may have seemed, we figured it was just a mistyped # so we did only what we could do....wait. When she called us back, we told her of the misunderstanding with the phone # and we explained that she hadn’t actually completed her order online the night before and that she didn’t have an order #. She had explained that the form never prompted her for her credit card information, hence not having the required information to complete her order she didn’t receive an actual order #. All she had accomplished was to create a customer account on the site with her information and incorrect phone #. The video card she had originally ordered was raised in price because they had since become more expensive for us through our own distributors due to lack of availability. We raised the price on that card and that price change was reflected in her reconfiguration of the system, but we intended on keeping the original price the same from the night before. Raphael told her that the price increase on the card didn’t count toward her order. Ms. Belgard failed to mention this in her post. The promotional code was also something that was put in place as an additional incentive just for her ordering a PC the night before making her eligible for free shipping and a free anti-virus (a $149.99 value). This incentive was never used as a bartering chip for her business, it was something we had additionally added to her order simply to save her some extra $$$$$. By this time she was rasing her voice and using an aggressive tone, but Raphael demonstrated his professionalism and maintained perfect composure trying to explain these things to Ms. Belgard. She repeatedly was saying to keep the mouse and keyboard that she didn’t want them anymore, but Raphael continuously explained that she wasn’t being charged for them.

Raphael called her bank twice and twice they stated that that credit card was not on file with them therefore they couldn’t confirm anything. It’s as if we were given a number from another card. Perhaps the bank needs to get things straightened out not MAINGEAR? He was just doing his job, which is to ensure that certain things are in place for an order to be completed. Namely, having a card confirmed as being from the person who’s name is printed on it. In order to verify this information, we have to call the 800 # on the back of the credit card to ensure the identity of the card holder. The # on the back of any credit card is used to verify this information. We as a merchant have done business this way since we opened years ago.

As we previously stated, the order had not been completed over the internet and didn’t even have an order #. On top of that, we had received an incorrect phone # as her contact #. We also, didn’t have confirmation from the bank whose # she had allegedly given us on that card. They have no record of that card # being on file with them. Therefore there is no possibility that we would charge a card without these precautions being taken care of. At this point it’s all seeming a bit suspicious, and by now Ms. Belgard had escalated her tone and had been treating Raphael and myself anything but respectfully. She was demanding me to process her order. There is no way we were going to confirm her order without all of these things. Not to say that she was a fraudulent case but it did seem very suspicious on our end and we were determined to clear it up before we moved forward. We’ve never had a problem of this nature ever before, a credit card not being on file with a particular bank. Our conversation ended with her threatening to write letters to magazines and post on every forum she could saying how she would ruin our reputation through this experience. We will continue to do business the way we always have for the sake of our current and future customers, completely disregarding Ms. Belgard’s lack of cooperation to our terms. We would be more than happy to build a machine for her if she would like to handle the issues at hand on her end whether it be the bank’s mistake or hers. We are not at fault in this case, and I firmly believe we’ve done all we could to help her if not at least educate her about our policy.

Ms. Belgard once again fails to mention that Raphael had steered her away from purchasing the 512MB 7800GTX so as not to delay her order to 30+ days. He had recommended the 7800GTX 256MB cards to expedite the build process being as those cards are readily available and the 512MB are on a serious backorder. In effect, this backorder has created an increasingly high ratio of supply and demand. Therefore, the distributors can get these cards sold for whatever price they want and if one wants it badly enough they will pay. We are even feeling this price change on our cost for these particular cards and are forced to reflect it in our pricing. Hence, the $100 extra Ms. Belgard had previously complained about early in her post. Remember, Raphael had warned her that the cards would delay her order and she still chose to go with those. Had she completed her order though, she would have received those cards whenever they were available for their original price of $599 because she was informed that the price change wouldn’t be reflected in her order. I may be repeating myself, but so is she and I am addressing each part of her post individually.

In conclusion, there are two sides to every story and we hope that everyone can recognize good business methods and procedures. We’d still like to do business with Ms. Belgard, hopefully she can find it in her to forgive us for doing our jobs.

Wow, maingear, if any of my freinds want a botique rig I will deffinately point them to you

It is nice to hear both sides of an issue. Overall it does seem like maingear handled that pretty good. Could they have done better maybe but it sounds like they did more then most companies would have.

Your website says 9pm. Your phone message 8 - I work most nights until after 8 so I thought I'd give it a try. You didn't NEED to pick up the phone, and it DID (potentially) generate you a pretty substantial order. It's not like you were doing me a huge favor - BUT, if you notice, I DID acknowledge my appreciation for Raphael's help both in this post AND the comment section on my original order.

He specifically told you to write that # under the comments section toward the end of the purchasing process and you expressly stated that you understood those instructions.

I told Raphael I wanted to spend a max of 4000. The system was configured at 3700. Much more expensive? Um... ok. Three hundred bucks is nice - but I don't know about "much more". I stated in my original post that I appreciated his help and suggestions. As for the order number - I DID do exactly as Raphael stated AND also complimented him when I placed the order. I was led to NO screen that allowed me to actually put in my credit card info (maybe your link system is faulty?). I assumed that the "follow up call" that I was to receive the next day would involve exchanging that info. Which is why I rushed to the bank to make the address change so the machine could be shipped to a more secure area.

I did exactly as I was instructed. I reiterate - I assumed that the "follow up call" I was receiving the next day was for the credit card info. Hence why I rushed to make sure the address was changed, making the "bill to" and "ship to" address the same.

The video card she had originally ordered was raised in price because they had since become more expensive for us through our own distributors due to lack of availability. We raised the price on that card and that price change was reflected in her reconfiguration of the system, but we intended on keeping the original price the same from the night before.

You did? Then why the rationalization that I was, after all getting the shipping and antivirus software for free? Why the discussion at all? Why not a simple, "Yes you did place the order at one price, and of course, we will honor it"

Raphael told her that the price increase on the card didn’t count toward her order. Ms. Belgard failed to mention this in her post.

Actually I did. BUT I had to "push" to get the original price. And listen to an explanation as to why you raised it (I don't care WHY you raised it - I just want the price I was originally quoted).

What a way to misconstrue what occurred. I didn't care if I was being charged for the mouse and keyboard. I told you to keep them because I didn't NEED them, and thought it was a compromise (which I should NOT have EVER had to do), over the video card. As for being "aggressive" - you bet, I was irritated as hell that I was quoted one price and had to wheel and deal to GET that price in what was less than 24 hours.

You are the only company - ever, that I have had a problem with. This has never been an issue. Your job is to SELL your product and make sure your customers are happy. If there is an obstacle to doing that, the onus is on YOU, not the customer's bank. JMO of course.

You bet I was angry. And extremely frustrated. And I didn't say I was going to "ruin your reputation" - you embellish. I said that I would write to every computer magazine and site that I know of regarding my experience.

Did you at ANY point, if you were really "concerned" offer a payment alternative? No, you didn't. And as for my card not "being on file" - why have other merchants had no problems processing an non existent card? Maybe they know something you don't? Maybe they pressed the right menu button? Used the right phone number?

We will continue to do business the way we always have for the sake of our current and future customers, completely disregarding Ms. Belgard’s lack of cooperation to our terms. We would be more than happy to build a machine for her if she would like to handle the issues at hand on her end whether it be the bank’s mistake or hers. We are not at fault in this case, and I firmly believe we’ve done all we could to help her if not at least educate her about our policy.

You can't entertain the thought that it was **your** mistake, can you?

Raphael "attempted to steer me away" from the 512 card during our SECOND conversation, not the first. It was after the price of the card increased (and you questioned my veracity) that all of a sudden the ship date was 30+ days.

Bottom line I have never ever had to literally BEG a company to take my money. Was I "disrespectful"? Not initially - *you* pulled that outta me. I was frustrated as hell. And you were basically questioning my "legitimacy" and, calling me a liar/thief what ever.

No customer should be treated the way I was treated (however politely it was done). Internet transactions involve a degree of risk on BOTH our parts. You didn't even attempt to process that card, OR make alternative payment suggestions.

Michelle

Raphael did state the price increase would not affect your total the FIRST conversation. During that conversation, you said "I want to be able to upgrade to the second 512 card". That was the first night you called, I suppose you don't remember that part. Overall, I'm glad you took your business to Overdrive PC, they are also a very reputable builder.

Top notch review. I think you guys at [H] are doing a fantastic job, I'm personally a DIY comp builder, but most of my buddies are not, so they are always asking me about different OEM builders. I also like reading the responses from representives from the various OEMs on the boards, gives you a little more insight in to there bussiness practices and kind of puts a "face" on the company.

In short, keep the OEM reviews coming :p
and as for maingear, next time a buddy asks about computers I'll definetly be recomending maingear.

Michelle, take your agenda elsewhere. Maingear didn't take any money from you and it looks as if they did all they could to help you get a system while taking every precaution to protect themselves and their customers (you) from credit card fraud.
