Main page and forum integration

Bear with me here, I was just browsing the front page of hard for the gazillionth time when this idea hit me. Maybe its stupid to you guys, but hear me out.

I think it would be great, if in the main [H]ard|OCP news posts, there were links to automatically created forum threads for discussion about each news item.

The great thing about this idea, is that its not exactly bloglike, where just anyone can post. and we would be very likley to have intelligent discussions about [H]ard articles instead of mindless banter and flame wars like I see on alot of other sites.

I know this would be alot of work, and maybe even harder than I know, to more fully integrate the main page, and the forum database... But as a long time reader of [H]ard|OCP I think this would increase the value of the page many times over. Even if the discussions aren't something that are kept archived like the full main page articles are, for the timeframe they are relevant and the discussion is heated, it would be something that would bring together the [H] Community a bit more. As well as having a consolidated place to post about this weeks [H] news.

Keep in mind, I'm NOT suggesting a front page blog where anyone who is anyone can post anonymously. I am thinking of a bigger step of forum integration where our great forums can shine.

Oops..
Sorry for the repeat posting

I hope this idea can be integrated.

Next time i'll do some more reading in here before posting a suggestion... :p

OK ok ok.. SO i read the other threads, and I guess wasn't really satisfied with the ansewers. The only thing really relevant was kyle's comment

I think that a specific forum, dedicated to this, with noone allowed to create their own threads, and explicit rules against stupid people (like we already have here on the board) Would make it an EXTREMELY great addition to this forum. We have a good user base here, and while there are a fair share of idiots still on here, I think the majority of us on here deserve some credit for the intelligent discussions that happen all over [H]ard.

Anyone think i'm wrong here?

Better yet, does anyone who could change this, agree with me?

I think the issue has been discussed enough that another thread isn't going to convince Kyle of anything. ;) I'm going to have to agree with the current situation, though. If someone sees something on the front page and wants to discuss it then that person is certainly welcome to come here and start a thread about it in whichever forum is most appropriate. I don't really understand what the issue is. Do people really need someone to hold their hand and say, "Okay, follow this link and you can discuss this topic, but only talk about it in this thread." I know a lot of sites link news items to forum posts and it is a fine idea, but I really don't feel it is very necessary. I'm not going to say you are wrong, but will say that you are fighting a losing battle. :p

edit:
Better yet, does anyone who could change this, agree with me?
That would be Kyle, and I think you know his stance on the issue. :p

You will find that if issues that concern many members, especially a hot topic will be posted in the corresponding forum either by Steve or Kyle for open discussion.....I personally think this is a sufficient solution to what you are asking.

I do agree this solution has been thought over, but I would like to push it, because it could go farther and work better than has been discussed. I don't see it so much as an issue of "hand holding", that only gets us places where we don't want to go, with issues that Kyle and the rest of us don't want to see happen here at [H]ard. Instead of hand holding, I see it as a static place to discuss these specific issues. most of us that browse [H] and read the forums don't look over every bit of the forums looking for a topic related to the newest news.

All the forums have their own purposes and are good and all, but I don't think there is a static place, for those who want to see what everyone thinks of all the recent news can go here in the forums, and just browse what everyone thinks of the latest news. I do think this as a seperate forum with its own rules would be well suited to this board.

Sadly, I do feel I'm fighting a losing battle here... This is a feature that would get much use, and if setup properly, would be rarely abused in the manner that noone here wants to see happen anyways.

bottom line, Kyle is the only one who can make that decision, and you've seen his stance in another post.

If you want to continue the discussion, I recommend PM'ing him, as thats a better way to get his attention.

Well, I guess i was hoping to have some other people agreeing with me here, rather than take my lowly sugestion to kyle, when he's addressed it already, and I seem to be the only one wanting this -.- maybe i'll shoot him a PM yet

It seems to come up fairly often.

To oversimplify I believe the reason why not comes down to "if people have intelligent things to say about it, they will anyway; autocreating one for every news post will just lead to a bunch of me-too crap posts". At least that was the way I took it.
