Mailbox mod

i belive that in some states its illegal to have a mailbox that wont breakaway. i may be wrong and im sorry if i am. something you might want to check into though.
 
I've seen similiar things done before. I believe the last one I read about the guy found baseball bat splinters all around the mailbox one morning after he set it up. :D

I doubt the mailbox has to be breakaway. Seriously doubt it.

Let us know if you find bits of a bat one morning!
 
Some areas do have those kinds of laws. Many of the mailboxes around here, however, are set in brick or concrete pedestals.

How about building a mailbox like one of those medieval training dummies:
a horizontal post on a swivel with the mailbox on one end a a big spikey flail hanging from the other end

yeah, the idea of something that latched onto an axle certainly came to mind, or something attached to a pick axe that would "snag" a quarter panel

Mine is barely hanging off the post simply 'cause I was drunk off my ass when I installed it :D I have it held up by bunjee chords. Although I did help my neighbor with his stone mailbox... ahh the good ol' days, before I discovered underage drinking. Anyways, nice mod dude, hope you find a snowplow wrapped around it next winter :)
 
We had people who kept smashing our mailbox, so we did a similar thing.

On our street it is mandatory that there are no brick mailboxes, and the mailbox must be breakaway for saftey, but we once bought 4 mailboxes in a month. So my dad bought one small metal one and one large metal one, put one inside the other and filled it with cement. Then he put it on a solid oak post (sunk 3 feet into the ground) and bolted it all together. Needless to say, the next person who will drive by it and hit it with a bat will have a broken arm.

The mailman was impressed and commented on it :D
 
i'm fairly sure that in MN you need to have a breakaway mailbox if you live in the country (damn plow drivers), thankfully we live in town and they don't get to close to our mailbox since the people right across the street from us are part of the fire department and first responders :D

That makes a bit more sense in Iowa, alot more snow up there. I'm never going to see a snow plow on this road. A grader comes by once in a while but the arm of the post is long enough, the grader should never hit it. Plus it would then take out the pipe mailbox 100' down the road from mine. Looks like on that ordinance all existing mailboxes were grandfathered in. So as long as they don't pass an ordanance here like that till next year, I'm good to go.
 
for 3 weeks straight my neighboor's mailbox got nailed everyother night. all it was was a cheapo on a woden post... then he decided to make something so it wouldn't happen again. Beinga contractor he made a cement post reinforced with rebar as this box is and left the woden form on the outside, he then got an extra large box and bolted it to the top ,when i say bolted i mean it he has like 20 bolts in it. 3 days later on my way to work in the moring i see peices of what apears to me to be glass all aorund his mailbox.. apernetly the culprits thought it was still a woden stake and tried to smash it only to have the bat bounce back and knock out the rear window LOL. 4 days later the same kids actualy took the time to unbolt it from the cement stand and in the process got caught :)
 
Where I use to live all the dimwhitted high school students would get drunk and smash mail boxes.

We finally got fed up, and fixed them good. Heavy duty piece of steel culvert, welded with reinforcements to a 4" diameter steel post. Post had 3/8" thick wall. Then welded two cross pieces onto the bottom of post, sunk it 4' into the ground, and filled the hole with 850lbs of concrete. Then the mailbox was mounted onto a bracket in the culvert.

We got them good one night. The bastards decided to run it down, mail box won, car lost. :)
 
Just a note: That Iowa law? Only mailboxes on public property. So if your mailbox is in the street, that's public property. However, move it just inside your property line....

In MS, my parents have their mailbox on the lawn. It's built inside a brick column. (With pretty flowers around it.)

If I was losing a mailbox often and this law was in place then I would do one of two things: Either say "screw what the law says" and reinforce my box, or place one of those large cement poles to either side of my breakaway mailbox.

Are you sure? The way I read it, only the limit of liability applies to mailboxes on public property.

Even that notwithstanding, it's not hard to find ordinances that are certainly about any mailbox; like this one, in Brookings.

Here on 101 in Chan some neighbors on Lake Susan were having thier mailboxes ripped up EVERY time a plow came buy. So they reccessed them back another 4 feet, same thing. They got code clearence to put in a "more substantial" mailbox holder, and in the newspaper the next week....'Plow requires repair after hitting mailbox'. I laughed for so long. :D

Oh, and at least here in Chan...if a plow does 'plow' your mailbox, it doesn't matter what you had....the city is only going to give you one of those cheapy 5 buck ones from HomeDepot...and that is IF they don't have a spare one from a condemming laying around.
