You are running a pirate copy of Windows Server 2003 EE with IIS, Terminal services, DNS, DHCP and now Exchange on a Virgin Media home connection. All together you are probably going to annoy other users on your exchange and annoy Microsoft for having no licences. (Unless you have a Server 2003 EE COA with 5 Cals, some terminal services licences and exchange licences.)
I just find it annoying... thats all.
I will try and help though.
you need to have you MX records setup correct and maybe reverse DNS.
i am running remote desktop and just that.
You disabled the guest account.![]()
no problem. Anyway, to your problem.
Any luck?
Without having too much experience with 2K server, it looks like you do not have relaying setup properly. Just so I have this straight, you were trying to send a message to other people using your 2K server as the SMTP sever?
You probably have to setup authenticated relaying. That is you will only allow people to send email from other domains (such as @hotmail.com or @google.com) if they provide a correct username and password. This will also prevent your mail server from becoming an open relay.
Just popping in to mention that there are NO static IP's on Virgin Media Home, this means your MX record will be void the next time you reboot your modem even after you have set them up.
Also admitting to having no CAL's should have locked this thread on the [H] because you are basically admitting to illegal activity. I didnt like the 'well not everyone can afford £700 for software' comment...not everyone can afford a Ferrari but it doesnt mean its ok to steal one. Since you are already aware of that I wont continue further...plus those 180 day licenses come in pretty useful for practical learning.
Its ok to learn however asking about the basics on forums isnt the right way to go about it...study up on them (properly i.e books or even google) and most other things will fall into place.
thankyou!Well Google will manage your domain email. I have it setup, it gmail interface with pop/imap. It works nicely and it appears as if it is coming from your domain not a google.com address. I like it alot, and i love the gmail interface. Its just a cheap alternative to not having to mess with spam support since google will provide that.
