ive tried downloading multiple mail servers, i run 2 FTPs and 3 HTTP *one off apache*, and i cant for the life of me figure out this mail server thing. its like something in depth with no intsructions ..... anyone got a good free one? http access would be great. i just flat out dont know what to do after i install the mail prog

I have been looking into this and unfortunately it is not so simple. I am looking at installing a mail server on a debian linux box and am going with postfix, courier, and squirrelmail. (not looked at the various spam/AV components yet) I have had to pick up 4 different books to try to get it going and I so far have only set up postfix and started starting to get courier set up successfully.

If you want to run a well admin'ed mail server you need to do your research and spend a good amount of time reading. There really isn't a really simple way to handle it.

The singular resource you need for setting up mail servers:

To add to that...

A great step-by-step guide for installing qmail and everything you would want to go with it (pop/imap/squirrelmail/spamassassin/clamav/etc).

I have used a couple of other guides written by the same people, but the one for qmail seems to be the most complete.

I think you're pretty much stuck using commercial software for running a mail server on Windows. For Linux, here's another thumbs-up towards QMail. Awesome awesome software.

i've kinda always liked postfix, easy to setup and use .. and with fairly good documentation
