Magnet and Hard Drive Problem?

Hello,

I had something very bad happen to my poratable iRiver 20gb MP3 player. After I got home the other day I put my MP3 player on a table, not noticing there was a magnetic impeller for a pump ony a inch away. This magnet was large and is very strong (it can distort a monitor if it is within 2 feet).

So I came down the next day to see this, and I am worried something bad may have happened.

My question is I am going to format the drive, is there any chance that a magnet could corrupt the tracks on the platters?

I DID listen to a few songs, and 2 out of the 3 played fine. The third one had alot of crackles and such in it. I am going to format later, but I wanted to know the answer to the above question first.

The consensus seems to be that you'd need one HELL of a magnet to affect the data on your hard drive. Don't worry too much about it.
 
Yeah anyone who has ever torn open a hard drive knows how ridiculously strong the magnets in there are. The drive should be fine.
 
Thanks for the replys. I suppose it IS just me worrying too much. I too know how strong those magnets inside are, the one next to it wasnt quite as strong as those. I listened to my MP3 player all day and it seemed to be fine. Got lucky I guess.
 
While it is possible for a magnetic field to corrup the data on the disk, it takes a big honker of a magnet to destroy the track markings that the servo motor follows - the makers go to a great deal of overkill making them.

Well, then its a good thing that its overkill. It probably saves alot of people from problems!
