Mafia II PhysX

I only ran the demo's benchmark and I'm not impressed. Once again, Physx looks forced, tacked on. Definitely does not enhance the overall game play and again you the a fps hit.
Plus, the graphics looks severely dated!

I think proper physics has to be created within the games own graphics engine, so that it can be optimized for that game and it can be ran on any system. Unfortunately, I don't see there being any uniformed standard that would be embraced by all game producers or graphics card manufacturers. I don't see nvidia licensing physx to AMD for free nor AMD paying for the right to use physx.

Nothing to see here folks.

Again, PhysX is used to make the game look marginally better. It does nothing for gameplay. Have a game where having PhysX on changes how one can play the game, and I might be interested. Until that day PhysX is nothing more than a gimmick.

The only real and tangible difference that is worth anything during normal gameplay that you will ever notice and see is debris on the ground where with PhysX off, it just disappears.

They can NEVER make a game that REQUIRES Physx because then that would mean that all AMD/ATI owners would be shit outta luck.

Physx is just a gimmick...I hate to admit that as Ive always thought Physx created some nice effects, but ultimately its useless.

And Mafia II Physx is kinda whack...just adds 1000 particles to everything you blow up...totally fake looking I think.

For the minor effects it's just not worth it (as an ATI owner). I was really hoping they would add more, but it's really no different than what they did for GRAW years ago. I really regret spending $300 for that Asus Physx bundle

You can tweak the PhysX by going into the Mafia 2/edit/apex folder

Make a backup.

Now anything that you delete will take that PhysX feature out out of the game. IE: delete the cloth folder and the clothing effects are gone but the rest are still in. Delete all the cloth files aside from the ones that say VIT and the xml and ms files and Vito's clothes get PhysX but others don't.

modding out the clothing physx and letting the rest run, even on your cpu, looks and plays great

I'd recommend taking out the clothing phsx from everything except vito since you are always staring at his back. That gives a good performance boost while leaving the other good stuff in.

I currently have an ATI card myself, and have had Nvidia cards, but I can barely tell the difference between PhysX on and off or it looks very unrealisitc in the videos. I dont consider myself an ATI or Nvidia fanboy but PhysX seems to be a gimmick.

Physx adds a little to the experience...nothing really worth mentioning though. Now...would i buy an nVidia card just for physx? Nope. But since i have two nvidia cards currently, it doesnt run half bad on a GTX285 with 8800gts 640mb for Physx(my rig isnt really used for gaming a whole lot, most of the time its folding, but i figure i may as well use my card for PhysX when its not folding).

The one and only thing that sells me on Physx is the immersion factor it adds; and its definitely there on Mafia 2. Like in Mirrors Edge; running towards the ledge of a huge skyscraper with a helicopter shooting at you, all you are seeing are particles all over the screen from gunfire; yeah, its awesome. That is there in Mafia, but it just doesn't work the same way. This is due to both the SCALE of the game and the fact its 3rd person.

It doesn't define the game as much (to me) as the above example of Mirror's Edge, but it definitely adds to the game. Enough for me to merit mine using Dedicated Physx.

So debris passing thru floor texture is better than staying on the floor 'simulated'.

Off course PHysX doesn't affect gameplay. It will never do, because ATI doesn't have it. Imagine having to have PhysX to complete the game. Ohhh the suing in the US i can see the internet imploding with forum complaint.

It just add to the overall look, witch run better with all ON and the mess that is GTA IV..

The only game I have really seen PhysX in heacy action was the recent Batman game.
