Went from these 2.1 logitech speakers I got a few years ago for $30 to these z-5500 I ordered for $250. We'll see if its worth it when I receive it =]

Hopefully you'll like the Logitech subs. They're boomy to me, and adjusting the volume of them seems futile. It's either too much, or nothing, which at least was the case with my ex roommate's Z-680s.
 
I have heard of other people complaining about the subs too, however, I've seen that many people say that it is not the case with the z-5500. Hopefully that is true :)
 
I have the z-5500s and yes they are boomy at times but all the extra goodies will make up for the boomieness. I adjusted my with my Audigy 2 ZS Plat. Software and turned down the bass and now they are perfect.

$250? WHO DOGY, that's a pricey speaker system. You can get a Sennheiser HD590 for that price.

I'm die'ing to hear what your thoughts are when you get them. What are you using to drives these, onboard sound or a sound card? (If you say onboard sound, ill fall off my chair ^_^ )

Maybe I didn't want headphones? Im using onboard sound storm. btw don't hit your head on the table while you're getting up ^_^

The onboard soundstorm is actually a perfect match for those speakers. connect them with an optical or coaxial cable for best results :)

some people, probably like him and myself, dont like having big things like HEAPHONES on our heads :)

Also, $250 really isnt anything in the world of audio. Once you get the audio upgrade bug, $250 just becomes a tiny fraction of the budget :)

Anyway, i know audio equipment is one of the most expensive hobbies I have seen. Just friday I was looking at 20,000$ speakers. But you'll never see me pay 500$ for a AC power cable, that's for sure LOL.

That's why I'm always amazed at how good headphones are for the price relative to speakers. The cheapest speakers I have found that compare to my headphones are 850$ per pair, which .... is'tn too bad if you keep them for 20 years or so.

I guess its a matter of prefereance though. I dont like wearing headphones, i and i like sharing my audio system with my girlfriend :) so that makes headphones a bit impractical :)

You can get those for less than $140 on amazon. For 250$, you can get refurb HD650s... get with the program!

You cant really compare headphones to speakers - they are for two separate applications.
 
Okay I pretty much don't know much about audio equipment etc.. can anyone help me out with the difference between optical cables or coaxial?

I was reading the optical cables may be "better" than coax because they are less susceptible to RF noise hwen the cables are longer than 10ft(whatever that means to me lol). The downside is that they are more "fragile" to damage if you move them around a lot. I am leaning towards coaxial cables.

What website should I look at that sells these speaker cables?

Well the sound will be exactly the same, and i doubt you'd have RF problems, i never have (and i usually use coax). Either one is fine :)

every cable will pretty much sound the same. Go to radioshack and buy them for $5 a piece :) Coax cable is the same thing as RCA or Stereo cable :)
 
Just make sure they are double sheilded cables. Even a cell phone can knock an unsheilded cable out of wack.

My dad usually splurges and gets AR cables. The pro 2 series is great for his application, especially for the price (I don't like Monster Cable as a company, so I try to protest them).
 
Wait so is the coaxial cables the same as the cables we use for VCR's, TV's ,etc? I know this may be a really "newb" question but I am pretty much illiterate when it comes to this stuff.
 
that answer could be yes OR no.......... all depends.

This is a digital coaxial cable from AR http://www.araccessories.com/Cultur...I Series;Audio;Digital Coax&ProductDetail=YES

Some other comon cables are RCA (This is a Red And White cable for audio, Left And Right are on diffrent cables.... also common is yellow for video. This is often refered to as composite).

You also have other things like Optical, but I have a funny feeling you know what this is.

I hate to tell you but digital audio coax cables are not the same thing as the crap audio cables that radio shacks sells.
Coax cables have a SPECIFIED steady impedance of 75 ohms Vs 300 to 600 ohms for most off the shelf the analog cables.
This means they offer lower high frequency signal attenuation, lower return Loss and higher bandwidth (Digital audio data is transmitted at 128 times the analog sampling rate, making the cable bandwidth required for high resolution rates up to four times greater than that of 44.1kHz rates. High resolution rates, such as 96kHz and 192kHz, now require 12.3MHz and 24.6MHz of analog cable bandwidth, respectively).

wow i was just owned :) If i buy a digital coax cable, will i notice a difference then?
 
Final question (maybe, most likely not lol), the speakers connect to the z-5500 subwoofer which then connects to the "Control Center". And I from the Control center I can choose to use the analog cables to connect to my PC or DIGITAL which is coaxial or optical right?

I just realized that my onboard soundstorm only has an optical output so I don't think coaxial would work for me.

optical is fine :)
 
You cant get any outer interference when using a optical cable. I have My system Hooked up to my computer by the 6Ch Direct, which is three,1/8" "Standard Computer Audio Plugs, and it sound great. I have My XBOX hooked up Optical, and soon to get my Receiver Hooked up COAX. When it comes to digital signals, You dont need the highest priced\quality cable out there. You are either going to get the digital signal or not. I got the average priced optical cable and it works great. So IOW don't go spend 80 dollars on a monster cable optical cable....because it will be just as good as the other brands 20 dollar optical cable! all of this above is of course my opinion.
 
Well I got the speakers yesterday and, yes, I am in awe at the improvement over my old speakers. The sub is huge as most people have mentioned but it hits extremely hard and is a whole lot cleaner than the cheap sub I had before.

I am currently using analog cables
 
Congrats on purchasing a great sound system...glad you aren't disappointed. yeah, im using the analog with no problem...

Also remember that you cannot turn of the decoder on the Z5500's so if you have both your computer and your speaker system decoding it wont work.
