so........... I have 2 GTX 580's. Each has 1 display port.... 2 dual link DVI and 1 HDMI.

I *thought* that if I got 3 samsung S27a750d's... (which only have 1 hdmi and 1 display port) that I could run 2 at 120hz.... or at least the middle one at 120 hz while the other two were 60 hz.

but to do nvidia surround it says I need to have all three monitors going the same hz. That means ........... I either have to exchange one of the monitors for a S27a950D........ Or... get a third nvidia GTX 580.

what do I do? ARGH.

The problem is.. if I exchange 1 of the 750D's for a 950 D... my monitors will be mismatched. I will have to put something under 2 of the stands to account for the difference in height.

Or... if I get a third GTX... I am not even sure I can fit it in my case. I got 2 of the GTX 580 frozr extremes and I had to put a plastic shim to keep the fan blades from hitting the other card. I am not sure I can handle a third GTX 580. all though in a way it would be sweet. On the other hand if I get 3 video cards I won't be able to have a sound card anymore so I will need some external solution. I was having problems with my sound cards anyway. :T

Get a new mobo (sell the old 1) to fit tri sli+sound card, a new case since they are relatively cheap and a 3rd 580 rather than having mismatched monitors and a higher chance of having mismatched colors.

If you can afford 3x750's you can't complain about spending some extra $.

The thing is I really wanted to get a new socket 2011 mobo when they come out at the beginning of next year.

do some motherboards actually have a little more space between the video cards? or is it all standard? because mine is supposed to be made already for tri SLI.

I just can barely fit the two because the fan of one touches the other.

here is my motherboard http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1366/P6T/

btw my GTX 580's are the lightning extreme editions with 3 GB. does that mean they are "larger" than normal gtx 580's?

(edit: btw my case is an antec 1200.... not really sure a bigger one is necessary)

You can get quad sli/xfire mobos which will give you enough room for 3 cards. Not sure if the 3GB cards are bigger, try using google to find out.

All motherboards have standard spacing. The only difference being some motherboards have the PCI-E slots spaced farther apart, meaning there's either another PCI-E or PCI slot, or just empty space, between the primary PCI-E slots (2 apart instead of 1, for example).

I highly doubt your 3gb Lightning Extreme are larger than the standard GTX 580 Lightning. But the standard GTX 580 Lightning is already larger than the reference GTX 580.

Socket 2011 comes out next month (actually about 2-3 weeks, launch date is somewhere in mid-November, current rumors at November 14). Ivy bridge is the one coming out near the beginning of next year.
