So for the last long while we have been using MacBook Pro's here at work (running Windows and OS X) and the time has come to grab some new laptops. However, the price of the MacBooks are up there and we are predominantly going to be using windows to do simulation and graphics programming in Windows...

With that in mind I've kinda thrown together some general desired specs:

  • 15" screen. 17" is too much as we have desktops for primary machines, but we don't want 13" screens because there are occasions we get stuck "on location" for a couple weeks and working all day on 13" could suck
  • Nvidia 6xx GPU.MX if possible. Some software we use is nvidia only, so I can't take AMD based laptops, and there are features of the Kepler architecture we want to explore, never mind the lower heat and power requirements, but i don't know what the availability is like. I'd think anything over 1GB would be good, but 2GB can't hurt. We don't need the highest end stuff, we just need to be able to get our development stuff up and running. We desktop towers with 680's or Quadro 6000 cards for actually running things.
  • 3rd Gen i5/i7 - save power/heat and get good performance. Much like the gfx we don't have to push the envelope, we just need it to be functional
  • 256 GB SSD - 5400RPM drives are just so damn slow, it pulls the performance of everything else down. We can always attach a USB 3.0 HD to augment storage should we really need it.
  • 8GB of ram should be enough

So with all those in mind I have been looking at the Asus G55 series or even some of the zenbooks, also the MSI GT60/GE60. However, unlike the desktop space I'm pretty oblivious to the laptop world (been buying nothing but macbooks for too long). If anyone could point me to brands/series I'm overlooking or has experience with the mentioned models I'd be grateful.

Well, 900$ Y580 with 1080p screen on black friday is a very good option if you need the windows included
