i haven't worked with an apple computer in over 4 years but.. anyways.. a friend of mine busted his laptop and asked me to have a look at it.

it's a core 2 duo 13" macbook that powers on, indicated by the power light; however, no chime and no display.. his display is cracked a bit.. hard drive seems to spin up. I have tried resetting smc.. tried resetting the pram.. nothing.. took the laptop apart no noticeable damage to the logic board. removed and reinstalled ram.. still nothing. checked connections everything seems to be find.. could his logic board be at fault here?
 
Probably a GPU or memory problem.

You said you removed and reinstalled the ram, but did you troubleshoot for a bad stick? Video is shared with the main memory. A bad stick could cause it not to display anything and not post.

GPU is harder to troubleshoot. I'm not really sure how to go about it since it's not a stand alone gpu. Could need a reflow though...
 
Usually if the power light comes on but you get no chime or grey screen then its probably the logic board. You could try troubleshooting for a bad stick of RAM but my money is on the logic board.
 
If you have an adapter you could try hooking up an external display to see if something is wrong with your display.

My Macbook Pro never chimes since I always turn the volume down all the way before I shut down so I never have to hear it.
 
I would bet logic board as well, though a reflow on the GPU could be a cheap fix, since if the GPU is dead, you would have to replace the entire logic board as well. Could also be an inverter issue on the display, but unlikely, as you get no chime on startup.

No way it's an inverter issue. Resetting the PRAM would have reset the volume setting and made it chime if it were booting properly.
 
Unless there is something wrong with the volume or speakers on the system. But, as i said, unlikely.

You can probably replace the backlight pretty cheaply if that whats wrong with your laptop.

The backlight going out is an issue for all laptops not just Apple and their MacBooks.
 
busted logicboard most lucky if you dont hear a chime or sound when powered on.
