Well, after careful consideration of new laptops I have decided to go with my first mac and get a MacBook Pro. However, being a windows guy all my life, when I went to chek it out at the apple store I was a little lost. Also, I have a significant amount of programs that I will need to use, and I have heard of boot camp.
A bunch of questions: (answer if you can, sorry if they're posted somewhere else)

Anyone who has successfully ran it please help. I heard there are some requirements such as the xp disk has to have sp2 on it is that true? In terms of the hdd, does it split the hdd in two exactly?

On mac side, is there a way to split the hard drive as in partiitons like one part of it for music, one part for os etc...

What is .mac or somethin the lady was saying if you have that then you can transfer everything if your laptop gets stollen.

What is iworks?

and say I have a bunch of word documents will I be able to use it in the mac's word processor?

What exactly does the glossy screen do on the mac notebooks? I have to choose which one I would like. I will be using it for video editing, slight gaming, and student life

Would my files on my external hdd work on the mac? thy are baiscially word, music, video from video camera, pictures.

Thanks in advance, I know its alot of questions, but im curious

Yes you will need a Windows XP SP2 disk to install windows using Boot Camp. There are other alternatives to Boot Camp though. Do a google search for Parallels.

Partitioning is done throught the boot camps software. If I remember correctly it lets you create the partition sizes however you like.

.Mac is apple's sort of oline storage / web hosting / email / iSync service. You can find out more info if you go to .mac

iWork is just like Office except without a spreadsheet app.

Just buy MS Office for mac os x. It's not a universal binary yet but it still runs pretty good.

People have said glossy screens tend to have better blacks and colors. Downsize is that if any light hits those you get really bad reflections...

Yes your files will work.

thanks shimmy
edit: does anyone have the slightest idea of when the os Leopard will come out?

From what I read Apple wants to release it at the same time as Windows Vista.

LOL so true. If anyone remembers Steve Jobs' introduction of Tiger back in the day, the tagline was "Long Before Longhorn". And it's still not out.

I am in the same boat suddenly needing a new laptop (decided to switch employers and they remembered to ask for it back (which sucks, considering several people who left before me managed to get away with their's).

I want a MacBook Pro, but I want it when they offer a decent resolution on the 17" screen. Lots of graphic artists use macs, so why is there no 1920x1200 option?

I can see why Apple runs those unfunny commercials on TV for people like you.

If I had to guess it was probably a Steve Jobs decision. For example the iPod was designed to output very large volumes to suit Steve who is partially deaf. The guy probably has poor eyesight, thus the smaller resolution. This is all speculation of course. I don't see any other reason not to include higher resolutions for atleast as a BTO option.

I see, no matter what I think the macbook pro is better than other companies, i'm just a tad scared of change, im kinda worried that when i get it I won't be able to do much that's why i'm so after the windows option.Maybe i'll wait till august before I purchase my own.

teehee, you're almost as borderline clever as I am with the leopard/vista joke.
