Macbook Pro madness

You know when they say 3rd times a charm? This isn't my case with my display on my Macbook Pro, because recently I've noticed darker areas on my screen on both sides of my display. Not only that, but also my bluetooth signal constantly drops forcing me to restart my computer to get it back up and running.
I go into the Apple store yesturday to get this whole mess sorted out, first 2 display changes were given to me without hassle, I was happy. This time I go in the Mac genius agrees that the screen is oddly unevenly lit, and says there shouldn't be a problem to swap it out for a new lcd, I was in an okay mood. He tells me all he has to do is talk to his manager and everything should be good. He leaves with my laptop.
5 minutes later he comes back with my laptop and says that nothing could be done and his attitude changes completely, saying that there is nothing he can do and nothing I can do and I would have to live with it. I asked him why his opinion changed in 5 minutes seeing as how he agreed with me in the beginning. After questioning his opinion he starts telling me every laptop on the floor was the same way, and ever after comparing the 2 I didn't notice the other 17 inch laptops having the dark areas mine did. I still had nothing according to the genius, so now I am on the phone waiting again to complain to some higher level because all I want is a screen change, nothing else. I never had this problem before and I am ultra peeved.

many yellings later some Apple product specialist has over ridden some kind of note on my profile that said "Do not replace screen" which he even told me. WHAT KIND OF SERVICE IS THIS!?!?!?
He said this was a mistake and everything is fine but I would have to go to another location to get my screen replaced to avoid arguing with that idiot of a Mac genius and his peanut size brain manager.
So angry.... gonna explode....

Sorry to hear about your problems. Where I live I do not have an Apple Store but I do have an Apple authorized reseller and service center. When I received my Macbook Pro, it had a defective SuperDrive in it. The people I got it from on Ebay gave me the run around so I decided it would be best to not go back through them. Dropped the Macbook Pro off on Friday and they had it fixed and back to me on Monday. That was great service to me. So you might want to see if you have a good authorized Apple service provider in your area. Hopefully they will provide a higher level of service.

The only reason why I got my Macbook Pro off of Ebay was I saved over $800 off the Apple price even with student discount.

hmm yeah I wanted to do that... I was so frustrated >=(
But what really baffles the mind is that the store that ONLY sells Apple products treats its customers as second rate people whilst most authorized reseller and service centers do a better job than people at the Apple store.
I applied for a job there as a creative genius and never got it... Guess I wasn't a big enough ass to get it. Nastards.

Hmm, never had a problem at the Apple Store. I deal with my business rep. though, he takes care of me.

You bought the MBP and have had the screen changed twice already...

You're going for your fourth screen?

Is that right?

I don't blame you. If I was dropping that kind of coin on a laptop, I would expect it to get great service. I do not see how a company can treat its customer bad sometimes. It is like they have never heard the phrase "Don't bite the hand that feeds you". I guess I am glad I do not have an Apple Store close to me. I definitely received great service from the service center.

I avoid Apple stores like the plague. I've had much better luck with Apple Authorized service centers.

I believe if you have the same part swapped more than 3 times in a certain amount of time you are eligible to request that Apple swaps out the whole computer. There are some restrictions on this, so ymmv.

If it is that bad, hire a lemon law lawyer. Will be taken care of asap.

lemon laws only apply if the computer has been REPAIRED 3 times or more...this person has had their entire computer swapped. I'm pretty sure apple would have no problem taking back the computer and refunding the OP.

I didn't see that part. It looks like he has had his display replaced twice, and he's having issues and will need a third display.

No no my entire computer hasn't been swapped, the display will be swapped for the third time... ONCE the replacement display comes in. And like being here in Toronto, I don't think we have lemon laws... I heard they will replace after a third missed fix on the same component, but other than that, it's pretty much up to Apple care I believe.

At this point I think that it is time to call AppleCare and not even deal with the store. Tell them what is going on, give them ticket numbers for all "replacement" screens and tell them that this is unacceptable and hase come to the point that a new machine needs to be swapped in because obviously the new screens are not fixing the problem.

The reason they are refusing to repair is probably to avoid the lemon law requirements. Hire a lawyer. FYI, when you sue, you can recover legal costs. :)

Edit: Doh, Canaduh. never mind.

Good luck dealing with apple support. Bet you'll think twice next time.

Just talk to apple directly.

The Apple store is like any other retail outlet, they exist only to screw you, as cynical as that is.

I finally came back to view this thread, and I saw 666 views for it.... Oh Apple.
So I've been waiting a week for the screen and it still hasn't arrived, I wonder where it is.

FYI,
Check your laptop thoroughly when you get it back. Since the screen is being replaced make sure they replaced it correctly. I don't know if the MCP's hinges can be swapped from side to side like the TiBook's hinges, but mismatching sides would ruin the finish on the hinges. Also, check that the screen does not close unevenly.

I had to deal with Apple a few years ago concerning an original TiBook and had all of the for mentioned problems. These clowns even had the audacity of replacing my bad LCD (one pixel wide vertical line) with a display that had multiple dead pixels. Granted, there were no Apple Stores back then, but my TiBook did go to Apple to get repaired. It took an hour of arguing, but I didn't leave that store until Apple agreed to fix my laptop.

GOT IT BACK BABY!!!! Not bad... but I shouldn't need to complain that much to get something that I own that is under warranty changed because of a defect in the screen.

I had a similar problem with AppleCare. I live in a part of New Jersey that is about 40 minutes between three different AppleStores. Anyway, the top part of my MacBook keyboard bezel had started to lift in the left corner near the power adapter. The only reason I can suppose is that it had been coming up from plugging in a network cable for about a week and a weak mount that got weaker. Anyway it was getting worse to the point that the lid didn't close comfortably and I could see into the case a bit. I have AppleProtectionPlan on it so I take it to one of the stores.

The guy at the genius bar looks at it. I'm not too thrilled with their genius bar, the looks like kids that should have been working in a skate shop, completely unprofessionally dressed which is pretty impressive since everyone else in the store is uniformly dressed. "Yeah, let me take a look at it, leave it here and come back in about 45 minutes". I should have known better. I didn't sign any work orders, which was the first mistake. So I left and wandered the mall with my friend and we come back. He pulls it out. I can already see it's not fixed and it's actually worse.

He claims he opened the case and "bent" the back screw mount. He hadn't. It was clear, I already know that given the 16 or 17 screws required to take the thing apart, the fact that he was still working the genius bar, there was no way he had the time to do that. He had in fact just pushed down on a part of the bezel until it reformed. It was now wavy and still stuck up a little in the corner, mildly better.

He then further went on, "ok well, I think it's going to continue to get worse. The only thing we can try to do is replace the keyboard bezel for about $350." I have the APP. "Doesn't matter, this isn't covered." I should have asked for his manager. That was the second mistake.

So less than a week later, the battery has now failed. Great. I decide this time to try another Apple Store (actually the store I had bought it from). Completely different experience. The girl behind the counter is patient, she dives right in on the battery problem, notices that on a reboot things are moving a little slow and takes a poke around logs to find out if there's anything causing that (I hadn't even brought it up). She fires up their diagnostic drive, tweaks a few things on my system all the while showing me EVERYTHING she's doing and explaining it all. She determines the battery is just dead to the system but it's only the battery and not the recharge control unit on the system board. I ask her about the keyboard bezel, she doesn't like the look of that, looks up their on hand parts inventory and sees they have the keyboard and then runs to the back to make sure the guy in the back is comfortable with replacing a keyboard on a macbook. He is, hands me the work order for $0, says it's all completely covered work and she'd be glad to push it through in an hour if I could wait so I didn't have to drive all the way back to pick it up. STELLAR support.

So it really is just hit or miss. Just like dealing with IBM's phone support at work, it sucks to have to start a chain all over again, but if I don't like who I'm dealing with I will hang up and reopen a support ticket with someone else until I get the support I need. Not everyone likes to do their job or go the extra mile, but you can't judge an entire company based on it. Just be sure to thank the people that know what they're doing and get things moved along and corrected.

*UPDATE*

Used the new screen for about a week and a half, the hinge is MOST likely broken because pushing the button to open the lid doesn't pop up, and the screen is REALLY loose compared to the first opening. ME SO ANGRY!!!!

I'm going back to the Apple store after I call Apple AGAIN about the crappy screens I've received so far... If they say "we're going to have to replace the screen to fix the problem" I am going to tell them where to shove this Macbook Pro.

You know what? I'm going to record all of this on video, from the call to the Apple store visit. So much swearing lies ahead... :)

******WOAH UPDATE!!!******

I called Apple Care and now... I AM GETTING A NEW MACBOOK PRO 17"!!! WOOOO!!!
I'll pose pictures when I get it... and maybe I'll dual boot Vista! :D

So they are going to hoop you up with the new version of the Macbook Pro? That is some good customer service on stepping up and taking care of your problem. Just too bad you had to go through all of that beforehand.

Try to squeeze a hi def screen out of them, if they are replacing your Macbook Pro. The screen is definitely sexy!!!

OOOOO I tried to get the high res screen, 160gig 7200 rpm hard drive, and 4 gigs of ram. Hahahahaha....
All I got was the hard drive upgrade, because the rep said that was all he could do. Heck, I don't care as long as I get that upgrade baby!
Oh heck yeah that video card upgrade... I am SO happy!
My girlfriend has a MBP with the 8600GTM and now I do too! Hahahahaha!
Portable gaming machine here I come!

That is a very nice upgrade! Props to Apple to stepping up and taking care of the situation like a great company should. Good luck and enjoy the new unit!!

Did they upgrade you to leopard as well? Where's the update damnit... pics or it didnt happen:D;)

IT'S HERE!!!

Althought no Leopard... and it took over 2 weeks to get to me...

ME = 1, APPLE = 0 :D

You might check to see if you can get the upgrade for free or reduced price. There is a thread around here that I posted a link to the update program from Apple. It says you had to get it on or after October 1st so you should qualify.

Laptop looks beautiful and just like mine! Enjoy!

Oh yeah... I really want to get it just for the box but apparently the I.T. guys at my school are going to give copies out for free!!!
I can't WAIT!!! And I made a quick 50 dollars selling my gig stick I pulled from the old MBP to some girl at school! ( I bought that separately a long long time ago... ;) )

The only new problem I see that has occured is that the guy at Apple said that my Applecare for my old Macbook Pro would carry over, but I just checked the serial and that hasn't happened yet... again with the calls I have to make...
