Does the latest Macbook Pro Matte 15" have a TN Panel or IPS? Anandtech says IPS, and random forum-goers on google say TN (without proof or anything like that, so I'm skeptical)

Hah I've always wanted to know this also. I have the first generation (2006) Mbp and the screen looks TN to me because of the viewing angles.

The LED screens might be different but I'm sure the first generation was TN.

6bit TN with a LED backlight up until this year, they switched to IPS with the 45nm refresh from what I've read. I wouldn't use the TN for anything that requires colour accuracy as it has some of the worst colour reproduction I've ever seen on a LCD. Definitely not suitable for any design work. The viewing angles are also pretty bad.

No, they are all still TN. Every laptop panel nowadays is TN, because they can get the thinnest.

I have used three Penryn 17" MBPs and seen (and calibrated) both the Samsung and LG 1920x1200 LED screen flavors (its a crapshoot). The LG is slightly better than the Samsung. Colors are actually excellent on both after calibration, within the limitations of 6 bit reproduction (again all laptop screens are 6-bit). All of this holds true for the 15" (now all LED) as well.

Strange, why does Anand himself say that they use IPS panels in his 15" MBP review earlier this year? Has anyone challenged his assertion there?

Not all notebooks currently. My X61t uses an IPS screen and I think any 12in SXGA+ does. I checked out a MacBook Pro before and it is definitely TN however. Maybe they changed it maybe not.

I have the IBM T43P with the 15" IPS screen. Just got a Macbook Pro 17" and unfortunately I think it is a TN type screen due to the viewing angle shifts. Does have very nice PQ though. I also had a Macbook Pro 15.4 LED definitely TN and I thought the PQ was terrible.

Im not sure whether its TN or not cuz ive never seen an IPS :/

regardless, this panel is much much better viewing angle wise than any other tn panel ive ever seen sooooooo

It's TN. Anand doesn't know what he's talking about, obviously. Look at the lagom viewing angle test.

The thickness of those IPS laptop screens (X61t, T43P)... wow are those fugly :D Nice to see IBM still making something with IPS, though that won't last much longer.
