Macbook or Macbook Pro?

I haven't used anything besides what Apple has provided.

Instead of making new thread i thought i'd post in here again.

My macbook seems to be very hot right now and if it was on my lap it would be too hot to have on it. Just watching videos of youtube i have seen the fans start to come on and stay constant the whole time til a min or two after watching.

Lastly i have been noticing that text seems to lag a lot and doesn't come up on the screen for a sec...not sure why this is, all i'm doing is using firefox.

Could be the dreaded thermal paste problem.

Might want to run a cpu temp program on it then ask Apple if that temp is considere normal.

I know that the circuitry is smart, but the heat generated from the battery being inside of the laptop while still charged still isn't good for it right? That's the way it was explained to me anyway.

My 2003 Area-51m's batteries are completely shot, and it was plugged in most of the time. They can't hold charge (both of them) for more than a minute after unplugging it.

I just don't leave my laptop plugged in as much as I used to because of that as well.

The heat isnt an issue, otherwise people who travel alot would have issues with their laptop due to the constant bettery on usage and heat created - who ever told you that, likely didnt know much about it, laptops are designed, like any electronic component to operate with in X temperature range and standards have to be met.

Ok well, you should stop in a let the guy with questions on calibration know about how to care for his battery then. I told him what you've told me but if it isn't right let him and me know.

hey...i got my black macbook today!!! now i have set it all up and now i want to copy folders from the old laptop to the mac...i have plugged in the ethernet cable...where do i go now?

I have been using the mac pro and love it. The only think I do not like is,it is slightly bulkier for school, but works great!

Brokenboysoldier, does your old laptop have a dvd burner? I would recommend just burning the old folders and stuff onto it and whatever you really want or need copy onto the macbook.

yes, but i have no dvds and i can't really afford any at the min

That i understand :p

Better off waiting for someone with more experience than me, just got my macbook monday...you'll love it ;)

i've got another problem now...i'm trying to save a microsoft word file and it says there's no room...i've got 92Gb free...but this is a file from my old laptop i sent through e-mail it seems to be tables i can't save

right i've fixed that problem now, and now i'm back to trying to get my music files from my old windows laptop to my new mac

There's some program you can get (not sure of the name, guess I'm not a big help lawlz) but it makes it possible for you to transfer from mac to PC and PC to Mac....

I was thinking of getting it as I have songs that I'd like to transfer to my macbook, when I get around to getting one :D

I have a macbook pro, and I was wondering if there was any mouse filtering software for the trackpad in windows. I am running bootcamp and I miss the two finger scroll, and when I hit it wit two fingers on accident the mouse jerks around.

I think this was true of some of the older battery technologies.... what did your Area-51m have, a NiMh or, hopefully not a NiCad.

Lithium Ion or even better the newer lithium-polymer batteries in the MacBook don't work the same way (also note that lithium-polymer are a newer type than the lithium ion ones that got Sony so much negative attention lately...)

older batteries were much more like car batteries, in that they had a 'memory'. They needed to be exercised regularly to know how to keep a good charge. Like a car battery... if you don't use it... it dies from sitting around at one charge. They used to recommend even fully discharging and then charging NiCad and NiMh batteries.

These newer battery types go more by full cycles over their life. So, they will degrade, but they basically have so many cycles worth of use to them... doesn't matter so much how you use that up.

I'm not sure about the heat thing.... if that's true... all our batteries are pretty much toast. :D

I think you were on the right track with the ethernet cable. If you had a USB hard drive, or your burner working... I guess that would make it less technically easy... but the networking should certainly work too.

I think the MacBook should have an auto-detect type ethernet port... but just in case, if you have a hub handy, it wouldn't hurt.

Go to your System Preferences -> Sharing -> Windows Sharing

Turn it on, and this will enable SMB type file sharing. You'll want the IP addresses of the machines to be on the same sub-net... so, maybe make one of them 192.168.1.1, and the other 192.168.1.2

If you have them both plugged into some router or something which does DHCP, then this should not be an issues (or wirelessly connected to some wifi router).

Then, you should be able to log into your MacBook from the windows machine and transfer your files over.

you could also try to 'ping' the other computer, just to be sure they are connected... or turn on the 'personal web sharing' and try to browse the IP of the MacBook, just to see if you can see it

The latest bootcamp drivers support the two finger touchpad + click = right click. Pretty sure the two finger scroll works too.

Another question I want to know the answer to is, if I bought one of these core 2 duo macbooks, would it be able to run vista?

Full support for Vista and the Aero interface.

And to BrokenBoySoldier:

Use an Ethernet cable, share the folder on your PC, go to your MacBook and open up your Macintosh HD, then open up Network then click on Servers. Then go to your PC and do run cmd ipconfig and put that IP in the servers dialog. Then use your Username and Password of your PC as the login to get into the folder.

It works better over a router where it mounts the MSHome and Workgroup's as folders in your Network Finder, in which case you just click on MSHome from the Network Finder and then click on the name of the PC that you want to connect to, then enter your login information.

Typing to ya from my hotel in Madrid Spain right now, pretty crazy. But 13 years of spanish immersion schooling from kinder to senior year of HS is really paying off. My parents haven't ever heard me speak like this, they're really impressed :D

if you buy a mb, your not techinically specd out to run the AERO.

it works on mine though, but MS posts you need i think 128 or 256 video ram? i think in xp the gma will pull 128. in osx itll do only 64, could be wrong on the first set of numbers.

anyways, the vista RC1 on my macbook, uninstalled in 15. (ive had it installed on a desktop for more than that, so ive had time to play)

it was utter crap on the whitebook. think video was wacky

i'm actually running vista rc2 on my macbook pro right now (tech specs in sig.) so yeah i mean it runs perfectly. the dirvers for boot camp don't work properly with vista right now, so that's the only downside.

the aero and everything works, and i'm getting a Windows Experience Index of 4.8.

That's great it works on a macbook PRO. I was worried about the macbook's GMA950, even though it says it can pull up to 224MB's if necessary.

chill. the intel GMA950 chip is supposed to be vista compliant.

Yeah :)

I guess I'll need confirmation on this, because I'm going to get vista and if the macbook can't run it but the MBP can, I'll get the MBP then.....

Of course I might get too involved with OS X to care if it runs vista or not :D

Intel designed the 950 specifically to run Vista. (The GMA 900's inability to do so is why it was dropped from the product lineup immediately after the 950 came out)

For the guy who had trouble running RC1, that's because RC1 (and possibly RC2, I don't remember) didn't include the proper drivers for the GMA 950. They had to be downloaded separately.

Yeah, umm the GMA 950 in the MacBook's uses 64MB minimum but pulls as much as 224MB when it's needed. Vista RC2 and RTM versions have the correct drivers to run on the GMA950's using Aero. The GMA950 was designed by Intel to run Vista and it was Microsoft's fault that RC1 wasn't working correctly on these chips.

Yeah ok. There is a lot of misinformation running around on the GMA950's on MacBook's.

They work just as they do with PC's, however OS X only says in the System Profiler that it is using 64MB, regardless of how much it is actually using at that time.

I'll find my post from a while back that was a quote from an Intel driver developer and worked on the GMA950...

Why do integrated graphics have to suck so much. I'm not asking for much, just a LITTLE more performance.

The difference between a macbook's GMA950 graphics and a macbook pro's X1600Pro is HUMONGOUS!

If the GMA950 didn't suck so much, even if they just closed the gap somemore, the macbook would be even more appealing.

I have no complaints about my GMA950... It runs Google Earth, Google SketchUp, Nanosaur 2, WC3, and even WoW well enough, especially after the Multi-threaded Open GL update in 2.0.1; however it can't do the smoke animation in the CD burning application "Disco" which confuses me... a lot...

There's also a 900$ difference between the base models of the MB and MBP. So that's why the MB uses a GMA950 instead of a lesser graphics card solution.

The GMA950 is completely capable of running all of OS X Core effects and even Vista's Aero user interface.

If you want 3D power for graphics or applications of that nature, that's why the MBP exists. You get what you pay for, and I still think the MB is a tremendous value for everything it can do.

Well said. :)

And yes... there are many combinations of features that some user could dream up, and want for less money... but I actually like that Apple doesn't have a huge, complex line of products anymore. The only thing I'd like to see in their laptop lineup (which has been rumored) is a very small pro level machine. Something like the previous 12", but with a display more the rez of the MB. If they use a non-integrated GPU... that might be just the machine winston856 is looking for.

There is a rumored 12" MBP ya know :D That'd be a really nice machine I'm sure, but it's just a rumor for now and probably for a while... MacWorld in January will let us know for sure I guess.

where can i get those drivers from? i have a copy of rc1, and the fan is just always on. Reason number one why i uninstalled. im wondering if it was video related.

i downloaded rc1 through MS, and got my product key a long time ago.

is there a way since im registered, i can get rc2, or the current release now?

No, the RC2 download is closed from open testing. Also Vista is currently at the RTM or (Release to Manufacturing) build which will end up on the the retail CD's at the end of next month.

Yeah yeah I know I'm being a little too demanding :D

I know I'm going to be happy with the macbook, it's good enough to run older games and I like battery life over gaming ability because if I wanted to be near an outlet in the first place, I'd be on my desktop.

i am sure it is just a rumour, think, how could they fit an external vid card into a 12" laptop, the whole idea of the 12" is battery life and portability "ultra-portable", and adding a seperate vid card can suck up alot of power and no need for it on a 12" screen.

The 12" powerbook used a mini-DVI plug. And for alot of people the 12" screen is the reason external video is required - 12" screen while on the go; external monitor while at a desk.
