Macbook Chargers still Self Destructing?

Basically, I'm set to buy a Macbook for school. I figure it'll be worth it. However, I've been searching the Apple site, and I realized that hundreds, if not thousands, have complained that the Magsafe cable frays and/or catches fire, resulting in a potentially dangerous situation. Now, I checked it out further over the web, and it appears the website itself is not isolated.

So my question is, am I really safe using one of these? I leave my laptops plugged in all the time to keep it topped off, and if this thing catches on fire, and brings down my apartment, yeah, I'm gonna be pissed to say the least. Do these things still self destruct?

i read that it sometimes shorts because people dont keep the plugs and stuff clean dont konw if thats true. mine hasnt burned ......yet

I've had mine for close to 9 months and it's still going strong. No signs of fraying or wear (and I'm not careful with it).

Went to the Apple Store today, and checked out the laptop. The Macbook is awesome, but the cable looks really slim. I assume if I tape the ending, it would be better for the plug. My main gripe is that the plug is too small for me to grasp without using the cable.

It frays. Always. I have to fix em when the careless social-lights (brainmass) break em, and all chargers i see are FRAHEY-E-HEY-YA-HAID style frayed.

It happens.

But here is another way of looking at it...

I was in a hotel with my Gateway C-140x (I love this thing... a lot...) about to watch South Park... I was much more tired than I thought, and fell asleep. The laptop fell off (and was fine) the cable/plug snapped off in the PC. The Mac Charger would not have done so. The tablet is fine (sturdiest lappy on earth) but the charger got 86'ed. So, here is another way to look at it.

Last thing - Dell chargers fray too... just they do it as at the transformer.

The thing is, I have two IBM and Sony chargers that have been through hell and back, and they're just perfectly fine, no twisting or anything. So I guess I would expect that of other chargers.

I'm not arguing with the concept, it's awesome, but the construction potentially lighting up...
