I have a friend with a Macbook Air who accidentally spilled milk on his keyboard. Most of the keys are not working. He took it to the Apple store and a rep there told him he would have to replace the top case for a price of $750. I'm sure a certified Apple retailer can do this much cheaper, but is it so hard to just replace it by ourselves? It's out of warranty anyhow, so that part is past. Does anyone have any experience with something like this?

Most likely they quoted him telling him "we can do the top case for X amount, but no guarantee that will fix everything, to fix it all (and if he still has applecare, let that get reapplied because liquid damage voids the warranty) we would send it off for about $750 and they will fix everything that has been exposed to liquid"

Ugh, well thanks for the follow up, I appreciate it. This is one of the reasons I don't like Apple. If they would compromise on some of their pricing, they could get more market penetration, but then again, I'm not sure they care.

Buy a luxury product, expect luxury repairs. If everyone could afford a BMW they would have one.

I replaced a keyboard in a MacBook Pro a couple months back, it wasn't that difficult. Lots of tiny screws and ribbon cables. I bought the keyboard with backlight for $50. Works just like new. I purchased the parts from here
