Any thoughs on on anyone who uses the .mac site for stowage and other computer related computer needs?

Too small for backups. It is basicaly an expensive thumb drive IMO. However if you have multiple macs that you work on, it can be handy with the sync feature. Also if you want to publish web pages and stuff using iWeb. Also the E-mail is nice if you are looking for a new e-mail client.

Bottom Line:
Depends on what you are using it for..
Good idea, bad exicution, they could have add more to it, like about 9 more GB, and better back up utility. Frankly Backup 3 sucks, you cant really automate it. It will do 1 full and then in increments, but if you want to do another full you have to manualy reset it. What a pain, Retrospect is way better.

I'd like to agree with you but at .mac being $8-15/mo (1GBstor/10GBxfer) compared to lunarpages $7/mo (5GBstor/400GBxfer)

.Mac features - FREE solution

Publishing with iWeb - learn HTML
Photocasting - graphic converter can do html galleries
iDisk - password protected zip file via HTML link or simply setup FTP server in os x or .torrent
Backup 3 - dvd burner/cd burner for backup + your info isn't floating around in the ether
Groups - sql php bbs
Mail - yahoo mail free
Sync - ?
Family Pack - multiple domains on lunarpages available
Member Benefits - imo the ilife apps are bunk so discounts are not valuable
Learning Center - a.com/support or s/discussions

What kind of an answer is that? Not everyone has the time or the patience to learn something like HTML when all they want to do is post photos of their kid's soccer game online.

Show me a host that offers a pre-installed (or 1-click install) of a gallery that exports updates to an RSS feed.

This is probably the only point I agree with you on. Uploading files to an FTP server is easy in OS X and integrates just as seemlessly as iDisk.

What if you want your info "floating around in the ether"? Isn't that the point?

Groups is fairly nice for a board that requires almost no setup. I don't know of any hosts that offer anything comparable with an easy install. The ones I've seen all offer phpBB or Invision which take hours to set up.

You can get an email address pretty much anywhere nowdays. This is a non-issue. I don't think anyone buys .Mac just for the "@mac.com" email address.

Sure, but everyone doesn't get access to cPanel. With .Mac, each user has their own seperate userspace and controls.

What? GarageBand alone makes iLife worth the money. Easily the best suite of apps to get with a new Mac, though it is included free with all of them now.

Those are only peer-supported. Don't expect to get any help from Apple employees at the Discussions board.

Email - Gmail...no contest (some prefer Yahoo, but i still like gmail better)
Storage - hah...come on...many places offer storage online for cheaper and or free depending on the content (gmail it to yourself?, gdrive?..use flikr...many places to put your content.). This also depends if you really wanted internet based storage in the first place...usualy a cd/dvd/thumb drive/portable hard drive/personal file server is much better for the purposes...not to mention you could just setup a fileserver (even on a mac laptop) you could ftp into.....walla...personal ftp server on the internet...(before you all get up on me on how HARD it is to setup your own ftp server and that not everyone can do that....you must be aware that this is an apple products forum....read the help in OSX...it basically tells you how to set it up for you....if you still cant do it...and your reading this forum...ask someone for help....im sure they will take the time to hold your hand....hey, thats what we're here for :D ).
As far as HTML or whatever.....there are lots of other places on the web that come to mind that you can do your wisprig editing on. Many wiki sites, dont forget google spaces, hell, you could make one in microsoft WORD if you really wanted to (not recommended....word sucks for that, but you CAN do it). But also there are many free wisprig utilz out there so you dont even have to do html....then once your page is done...upload it to your file host. done.

The point is, until they update it/make it cheaper/make it FREE...i dont think its worth it.

Bought a Powermac locally that the guy had bought .Mac but never used it!

So I signed up for it. I mostly use it for syncing my bookmarks, passwords, saved passwords in safari, mail accounts, contacts, etc. It is useful when you buy/sell and use a lot of Macs.

Other than that I use it with iPhoto, Aperture, and iWeb. I have a real website, but I use this for fun personal stuff with friends and family, its just sooo easy.

Other than that, I don't use it much. They offer some free software to .Mac members, but no big programs and I generally have whatever I need/want already.

Liek another poster said, if you can get it off ebay for 50 or less, go for it.

I guess i could see using it if you used a LOT of different computers...but then again, you could do what most of us do and keep all that important stuff on a flash drive just as easily, if not faster. (especially if you get like a 2gig or bigger flash drive). And its faster! But i guess it is somewhat usefull, just not for most people.
