Mac Pro Microphone Help!

Hey I just got a mac pro and everything is running smooth. I love the machine in every regard except for the fact that i cant get a mic to work. I'm using a standard analog headset and I think what I've read may be stating that the Mac's line-in will only support amplified microphones (something like USB?). Basically I just want to make sure this is true before i pony up the money for a USB headset. I'm thinking I may have missed some sort of configuration option somewhere.
