Mac Pro 2009 repurposed?

Is there any use—antique, practical, or otherwise—for my good ol' Mac Pro 2009 tower?

I thought about repurposing the base to try and build out my own NAS, but then decided that I'm better off purchasing a dedicated system rather than trying to build myself.

I also thought about attempting to refurbish it and try to resell.

Is it worth anything? Can I justify any value in the parts? I can't even remember what the current specs are, or even if I did any upgrades.

It won't be a bad NAS with its ECC memory. It probably takes a lot of memory, too.

As for OS, running Linux or FreeBSD directly is a nice learning exercise that leaves you with much more control over your NAS.

That's fair. That's for your rec. I'm just so hesitant to dive into Linux or anything too technical.

Well damn, maybe you could lend a hand to those behind you, point me to step 1, wish me luck and send me on my way instead of chewing my head off.
At no point did I use foul language or all caps or anything, you might want to toughen up a few notches and not be such a wuss.

Just looking out for your well-being. Wish you all the best.

This is going to be a perfectly fine "browse the web" PC in 2025, or you could have it share out files as some sort of NAS, but in both cases it's going to be a fairly massive power hog in a truly beautiful case. I have a couple of these sitting in storage in case someday I decide to mod it into a PC enclosure, but I've never had time or energy to do so. Today, these are high quality Nehalem-based workstations in world-class enclosures that can run a Chrome or Edge reasonably well. That's about it.

I'll bet your tower still has enough power to run Sequoia decently.
