If you own a Mac and watch porn (The Magic 8 ball says “odds are good”) you should be on the lookout for a new piece of malware out there that disguises itself as a codec required to watch porn.

But to get infected with the malware, you have to accept the invitation to download "new version of codec," open up the .dmg (disk image) file, click the installer.pkg file, and enter your administrator's password, according to Intego. Once infected, the malware changes your DNS settings to hijack Web traffic and redirect it to phishing sites or ads for porn. And you still won't get to watch the video.

What's the news? That trick has long been used on the PC.

If you're a hacker, its actually a great idea: get the user to do something stupid at a time when their brain isn't receiving its proper blood supply (since its being diverted for another, umm, purpose :p ).

Awesome, been wodering when this codec would come out..I can finally start watching my porn videos again, thanks interweb!

=P

Hmmm... the other day a site said they encoded all their files to a new flash format and you needed the flash player. Instaleld it. But it still does not work!!

Wonder if I may be trafficking.....

once again, we see that Apples security features are no better than windows when the users will type their password anyways.

LOL

This is great news.

All them Mac zealots can now cram there so called "Better Security" right up there ass sideways...

I wonder who will be the first to create ispybot, or ispyware removal, or iadware, maybe ican'ttakethebullshitanymore and get a real machine.. :D

whats this, the third piece of (somewhat) widespread malware

all of them being targeted towards absolute morons.
I count 4 steps that require user intervention to get this malware on the computer. how bout some malware for windows where no user intervention is needed?

seriously, i have no doubt the lack of malware is partially due to the small market share, but that doesn't mean that there are enough people sick of Apples "no viruses period." that ONE would happily make a virus that would get them to shut up.

That said, I will stick to no virus scanner on my Mac for many moths to come, considering I don't share files with windows users.

Wow. Someone composed a program that molests your computer after you install it normally and provide the admin password. That's brilliant stuff. What an "exploit".

I'll stick to my no antivirus on my windows boxes considering I don't do half the stupid shit that gives most people their computer viruses. And I'll stick to my no antispyware for the same reason.

Agreed and signed.

I'm also a proud owner of a clean Windows box with no antispyware and virus program.

i r leet :D

My work computer on the other hand has an antivirus software just because it'll be totally irresponsible not to. lol

Tech Support: May I help you?

User: Yes, I accidentlly turned on my Mac, opened a web page, went to a PrOn site, clicked on a link, said 'yes' to download some software, provided my administrators password when asked, and completed the install.

Now I have spyware on my computer...

Tech Support: Sir, I highly recommend you NOT operate any heavy machinery today. Or ever, for that matter...

The funny thing is since malwares are so extremely rare on Macs, when a Mac user gets one, you KNOW where he/she had been. :D

Mac User: "Oh great, I have a virus on my computer"
Friends: *backs away from Mac user very slowly*

Forget backing away, just whatever you do, DO NOT shake his hand :D

mac users watch porn? i thought they were too artsy for that stuff ;) :p

Mac's are great for viewing prOn. They aren't subceptible to almost any of the viruses or other computer transmitted diseases common to PC's used for this purpose.

So I've heard :)....

Okay guys, stop using this as evidence that Mac is not secure.

One could just as easily do the same thing on a Windows box by telling the user, "to watch your porn, confirm the UAC prompt..."

lol deal with it bud. For years Mac users bashed Windows for insecurity. What? It's not ok for us to do the same? Bitter pill to swallow.

NICE! ;-)

payback's a B*T$H. Anyhow, you have to agree, their incrase popularity did this. As I mentioned before, maybe there's so many antispyware programs out there for PCs -- and virtually non-existance for the MACs. Malware companies will shift gears. ;-) On top of that, most MAC users aren't too use to some of the things about pop-ups and stuff. So they'll probably just agree to everything that comes up to their face.

We'll that's certainly a lot of steps just to get some DNS servers listed. It's not even an exploit, per se. I got an email this week that all I had to do was click on the .jpg attachment and it opened up a new email (that looked legitimately from my accountant) that would have disabled my firewall, and taken me to an insecure website. Luckily I was on my mac at work so nothing serious could have happened.

(laughing at the window's fanboys who think this is the beginning of the end of apple computers.)

No, not the beginning of the end of Apple, look at the PC and all its problems, has it died yet? But, now that Mac's are becoming more mainstream there will be viruses and malware that is targeted towards it. As stated all along, the only secure computer, be it mac, windows or linux, is one with no net connection.

Which is exactly how 99% of viruses are installed on Windows, telling people they need to download something to view a page.

If you dont do stupid shit then you wont get a virus on Windows, maybe once every few years youll stumble across a rare exploit that auto installs crap through IE, but those are extremely rare if you keep Windows updated.

People are just so damn stupid that they think viruses get installed automatically, since they would never consider that the "XXX Search Bar" they installed could be a virus.

wait wait wait wait.. the XXX Search Bar is a virus?

CRAP!

In other news, if someone sends you an email that says to run sudo rm -rf / on the command line (and enter your admin password when it asks you to) — don’t do it. Interesting attack method — send someone malicious software and ask them to install it as administrator. The defense? Don’t install it.

i miss the days when people at the [H] actually understood computers.

Alright, let me clarify: I think Windows is more secure than Mac and am not condoning Macs in any way.

I'm just saying we can't use this porn thing as an example of why Macs are insecure. We all know that Apple's "Macs can't get viruses (because no one targets them)" claims are ridiculous; let's not counter them with equally stupid "Macs can get viruses (if users disable the security measures)" arguments.
