That my first mod ever. I wanna put a ibook G4 in a case of none working Nes (yes, that can exist). But i don't want to do any new hole in the Nes Casing.

I got all the part from my old Apple Tech job. (spare part left by costumer)

I buy sleeving and shrink tube to make clean wire job inside ( you will never see a Nes that clean)

I got a dremel and some stuff to cut metal, but i choose to take a side panel of a P1 server ... that is so thick, but that the cheap metal i got. I already cut 2 metal piece, 1 for the logicboard and one for the video connector. (pic will come later). I cut them square to begin, the I will do the finishing job to give them there final form. (hole for screw and wire)

Since i got to to fun with my dremel and change idea, i already cut all the plastic spacer inside the casing at the same level than the riser for expension. So now I will have to do some metal spacer.

I will also include a IR receiver for my Macally keyboard mouse combo, and reroute the Power LED to the Nes Power Led. I will also reroute the IR receiver to a New position, since I'm not sure if it will all enter in the nes cartridge.

Photo031.jpg

I will use the power switch of the nes and circuit, but I change the white led for the Red led (not in pic) I use the circuit board for the switch and the led. I just remove the blocker for the power since i need a non statinnary power switch.

Photo027.jpg

For the sound i will use the iDog wiring, it will be shorter and sleeved

Photo017.jpg

For the logicboard, i already cut some of the brace, but need to continu that soon.
I twist the heatsink to gain some space.

I remove the white cover of my mini-vga to video (still use RCA and S-video since my Tv isn't a HDTV)
Photo018.jpg

The DC adapter that i will sleeve and find a way to screw it to the mother board trail or it how (not sur for now.

Photo016.jpg

The stock fan, maybe i will replace it, not sur for now, but i make the whole thing run for 48h in the casing (w/o anyholder) w/o fan and I didn't get any problem. I got a on/off switch that i will use if i but it in.

Photo019.jpg

The top part of the case will contain antenna and internal speaker.
I'm not sure if it's good to sleeve antenna ( anyone know ??) but i think the antenna part is just the metal end.

here a plan of how i see the stuff inside
plan.jpg

Red = IR (if it inside of the Mario Bros/Duck hunt cartridge)
Green = Logicboard
Blue = Power button
Yellow = DC board
light blue = Video connection

Coming soon (since no photo but already done) LED changed on power button board, first cable sleeving and 2 metal plate for the logic and video.

I got the 14" LCD that come with the ibook, but i don't find anyway to but it in, too big to enter (i was thinking of a nes laptop)

Hope you will enjoy the project.

This could end up being a pretty cool case mod. All of these case mods make me want to do one but I lack the tools and the skills and am limited on money.

Good luck on your Mac ONes X, though! I can't wait to see the final product. :)

This mod looks interesting, I'll definitely check back. But please post smaller images (or at least focused ones). They gobble up bandwidth.

Sorry for the pic, I will take them back i think.

Small update : My dremel cuttin par go fliing from 4 stores and i don't find it anymore ... so I will buy new one soon.

I also change my 2 usb extention for a usb hub with small extention, that will save me some soldering

I try to take new pic tonight and change (and reduce the size) them in my first post.

Update :

The first metal plate that i cut for the MiniVGA
Photo034.jpg

The plate i started to cut for the LogicBoard, it will give you a better idea of how big is the first one. It a rught cut, i will cut all the hole for screw and wire after i will be sure of the exact position of the logicboard.
Photo036.jpg

I had remove the power led from the IR board
Photo032.jpg

I will remove the IR receiver to put it on the top of the second player controler (first one will be 2 usb the second one usb and the receiver)
Photo033.jpg

That is the keyboard/mouse combo
Photo015.jpg

that is my first sleeving ever
Photo028.jpg

it for the power buttom, the blue and green will be for the led when i will be sure where the IR board will be I will sleeve them togerter
Photo030.jpg

The new Led on the power board
Photo029.jpg

My USB nes controller
Photo023.jpg

The futur decoration for the hole
Photo024.jpg

It all for now, soon i got time i will finish the logicboard plate.
I wish it will be soon

UPDATE :

I finish cuting the plate for the logicboard yesterday
Photo037.jpg

I didn't fit perfectly but for now it's not a problem
Photo038.jpg

Today, I cut the hole for the 6 pin that hole the top to the bottom of the nes and the big hole for the wiring
Photo040.jpg

Those will need to be polished, but i will just do that when I will have completly finish that part.
Photo041.jpg

And I also have time to drill small hole for logicboard spacer, those will need something under them to stay in place.
Photo044.jpg

And those 2 pic are for showing my work place, great view and lot of fresh air and a lot of chance to drop my stuffs of 4 floors

The only comment right now is that it's a REALLY... REALLY... REALLY,REALLY,REALLY,REALLY,REALLY bad idea to be cutting with a Dremel with your electronics just sitting in the open air. The metal dust is probably all over your PCBs.

I recommend stuffing it in anti-static bags until you are ready to put it together and creating cardboard mockups to get the fitting until then.

Gah! You should have utilized the NES Controller ports by hacking them to accept USB connections via the connectors. It isn't hard, but it requires a little bit of creativity. It looks much nicer for an NES mod, trust me ;)

Thanks for the advice, i will not do that again, but i alway blast the part with Compressed Air, and the part will not be use for a little will.

The problem is that i will use different component with usb (Memory stick, USB nes controler, and other stuff) so I need more than 2 usb port and I will use those componant on other PC so i can change the connector.

But you give me a idea of a nes to usb connector (like those on Xbox) ... i will see if i can do that ...

You don't have to use the existing ports if you have a USB header on your motherboard. Just pipe the connection(s) to the front panel controller connectors. Unless you plan on using your controllers on other computers, too.

If you only plan to use them on the NES PC definitely do it. I think it adds a very nice "last touch' to these mods.
