I would like a mac but I just don't want a laptop I already got one. I don't want their Super expensive dual towers either. iMac looks nice But I have a nice 24 inch monitor. The mac mini looks tempting but its also outdated as hell. When is Apple gone have a mac mini refresher?

there are actually rumors going around the web that Mac Mini's are going to be canceled. From memory it's because it's the least profitable of the Apple line, and it was a product that was sort of forced onto the company by shareholders...

They think that because like you said, the Mac Mini has gone way past it's product refresh cycle.

you could always get a 24 inch iMac and have dual monitors. That would be a pretty sweet setup.

The Mac Mini is perfectly fine for everyday computing after upgrading the ram. I use it solely for a jukebox with 1 gig of ram(going to upgrade to 2 gigs)

I have heard of people using them as HTPCs? Is this really a viable option or would some major overhauling need to be done? Of course I would upgrade the ram to max and put a huge HDD in there but aside from that would it work? And No I dont have a HDTV, only a damn Sony Wega that puts out 480i...

You'd need to buy some sort of a scanline converter to hook it up unless your Wega has DVI, since all it has is a DVI port. If you want to use it as an HTCP, why not just buy an AppleTV?

Actually that was more of a rhetorical question than anything else. I would buy one when I get an HDTV (about 2yrs or so....damn wedding) and I have seen a few people on different forums that have them as HTPCs. I dont know about the Apple TV only because it just seems like a media streamer and nothing more. The full functionality of a pc at my TV is what I would be looking for. That make sense?!?!

i dont think the proc is powerful enough to decode hd formats.

Since Leopard is now 64 Bit (fuck you very much apple, my core duo MBP is now worthless) the mac minis are now obsolete and wont run leopard. Since apple lied and claimed that everything from the g4 on would run leopard, alot of people bought them. I hope they can get some money for them.

Fail. Apple never said that it wouldn't run on 32-bit processors. There's nothing on any of Apple's pages that says that Leopard is 64-bit exclusive.

"10:37AM - "I can look at Word docs -- anything I want to do. Full-screen previews. I can rapidly examine these things. That is Quick Look. A great companion to the Finder and other apps. Number four: Leopard is 64-bit top to bottom. Not only does it have 64-bit underpinnings in Unix, but we've taken it all the way up through Cocoa. This is the first time 64-bit will be mainstream in the PC world. One version of Leopard will run 32-bit and 64-bit apps side-by-side. We do NOT have two versions of Leopard. And that's why this is going to be the first time 64-bit goes mainstream. It's very very cool." Demo time. "It's a shootout between 32-bit and 64-bit... this app is going to load in a giant photo."

Directly from the engadget coverage.... Yes it says that it will be the first mainstream 64-bit only OS but that it will be able to run BOTH 32-bit and 64-bit apps side by side. Translation, it will be able to run both no matter what in a 64-bit environment without problems.:D

There is nothing saying it WILL run on 32 bit machines. It says 64 bit from top to bottom, and will run 32 bit apps. Show me where it says it will run on 32 bit processors. This is a blatant ploy by apple to get everyone who doesnt have 64 bit to buy a new machine. Thats EVERY g4 owner, and every core duo owner including every mac mini. Its bullshit plain and simple.

no, there is one 64 bit version, which will run both 32bit and 64 bit aps, like the 64 bit version of vista. it will install in a limited fashion on 32bit machines, defaulting to 32 bit versions of the drivers and aps where available.

I think a lot of people are getting hung up on SJ's "one version" comment. I think what he really meant by that was that when you buy it, it's one box, with one install disk that contains binaries for all four possibilities (PPC 32&64, x86 32&64), and it will just install and figure out what you need.
