Mac Mail POP account

I have a user with a Macbook Pro. Today we switched to a new email host, and switched our MX record to the new server. I got everyone updated to point to the new mail server except the Mac user. We attempted to change the server settings and were having some issues. After some frustration the original POP account got removed in Mac Mail in an attempt to recreate it. What we discovered is that unlike Outlook, when you remove a POP account in Mac Mail it deletes the inbox and all of the email in it without warning. So now 8 years of email has been lost. Short of having a backup does anyone know if there is any way to recover this email? I don't know at this point if a backup is available, or how recent it is if there is one. :eek:
 
Did the user configure it to store messages on the server? If not, then you'll need to restore from a backup.
 
There are about 500 on the server, but i think he had about 9,000 emails. I hope he has a backup.
 
We found a backup from May. Over 17,000 emails. If it were my inbox I would archive some... in any case this is being called good enough. Thanks for the replies.
