I dont have access to the Apple hardware diags disk, are there any third party hardware diagnostics available (bootdisk)? My friends 12 inch Powerbook gets to the loading screen and hangs. I'm a PC guy, but I was tasked with fixing it of course. Any help would be appreciated.

OS X?

You can hold down command-V during boot for verbose mode, or command-S to go into single user mode.

You should then be able to at lease get into the system to view log files or something, so you can start troubleshooting.

It's a UNIX based OS, so you want to watch the screen during verbose mode, or in single user mode head to /var/log

You may also want to try zapping the PRAM.

During Boot, hold down command-option-P-R, do that about 3x to make sure it gets cleared, and see if it boots.

Yeah its OS X. I'll give that a shot when I get home. All other input is appreciated. Thanks

note about clearing the pram

if you do it correctly, you should hit the pwr button once, once you hear the tone, press that button combo, then hold it down and the bac will reboot and you will hear the tone a second time (without you hitting the pwr button a second time)

just thought id clear that up..seems to confuse a few people

I couldn't get either of these commands to do anything. Once I hit the power button the screen stays black until I get the grey loading screen with the rotating loading icon at the bottom and it just keeps spinning. Any ideas?

Scratch that I got single user mode to come up. Then I ran fsck and I got a whole lot of Orphaned nodes, followed by a lot of missing thread records and it should be 0 instead of 926 or some high number.

Also just thought I would add I'm gettin a lot of disk0s9 I/O error. Everything I read online points to hard disk failure.
