MAC G5 with logitech 5500's sound skipping problem

well my father finally got his logitech Z5500 speakers to compliment his new G5 mac desktop. annyways, he is haveing a problem with the sound clipping out every so often when playing mp3's. i am not sure if it does so when playing DVD's. i will have him try it when he gets back, but i am really mac retarted so i am going to wait till he gets back to try it.
what could be causeing this to skip?
he is useing the optical output on his sound card to the logitech's
