Will be adding in a LaCie Firewire 800 card at some point along with getting better harddrives in it.

Nicely done, although yes, it does need moar display. Why the stock HSF though?

edit: and if you don't mind my asking, how much did you source the chassis for?

If the apple displays weren't so much, I would have one. I want one of the new 24" led's.


haven't decided on a new HSF yet. I want something very quiet.
I'll be replacing the rear masscool fans with some more sflex fans at a lower rpm.
possibly thinking about getting a big passive cooler for the video card too.


ended up getting the case for about $80 shipped from ebay :) Some tv station in Colorado was upgrading to new Mac Pro's

Magic mouse ;-)

and after about a day of using it, it's no longer awkward like it was in the store. its pretty cool having touch gestures on the mouse :)


i actually got the case mostly stripped.
couple fans and cables were all that were in it.

the hardest part was actually getting the front power/led/firewire/usb/audio working.

it uses a tiny connector that i had to splice into every wire to make it work with a normal ATX motherboard. Firewire headers are TINY as balls :-(
 
Well, it's a good thing that after all that work, you'll probably never use the firewire port anyway :p
 
actually....

i've got my external harddrive plugged into it right now.

also, my compact flash card reader is firewire based(fw800 like my external harddrive)

until i get a fw800 card in the system, i'm using a fw400 to fw800 cable for both of those :)

What mobo tray did you use and did you modify the power switch at all or is it direct plug in?

I also notice you're using the stock G5 DVD drive. Is this also modified?

Thats the mobo tray i ended up using.

Power supply is actually set back a few inches from the rear of the case. I made a cable to plug into it and mounted the female end to the outside of the case.

its actually some toshiba DVDRW, but i think apple just uses stock optical drives anyway, as the mounting holes line up perfect

They did but in some cases you had to remove the front off the dvdrw drive because it was too big to fit through the hole in the case.

I remember having to upgrade non-super drive g5's by adding a pioneer dvdrw.

+ 1Tb WD Black hardrive
+ Lacie Firewire 800 pci card
+ Belkin 802.11B/G

- WD 250gb Drive
- Seagate 320gb drive

i'm happy to say that both the firewire card and the wifi card installed without any problems :)

i restored from a time machine backup to the new 1tb drive and only issues i had were having to manually make the drive active from the install dvd.

The link you provided has 120mm fan hole while yours has 2 80mm fan holes. I'm afraid the 120mm might not fit with the G5 case.

if you scroll down, there is a drop down where you select the 120 or dual 80's
 
O shit so this is running the OS that I think it is without mentioning any names? Pretty cool that you've got it running w/o issues. Did you have to do a lot of kext editing, etc? Or was this hardware researched and chosen for compatibility///

hardware was running windows before and i'm using it because it was on hand :)
just turns out everything works great :)

its running current 10.6.4 all updated and no issues.

MOST of the issues were with the initial install. once it was loaded, things got easier.
 
how hard was it to fab the tray on? and i love your pics btw, super crisp.
