Mac Book Pro Won't Boot

Hey, I can't get my Mac Book Pro to boot. It was working fine and I closed it while on the phone, but after returning to it 30 min later it wasn't responding so I attempted to hard boot it. When I tried to turn it on again it wouldn't start. The screen remained black and the apple start up sound was non existent, but there was power as I heard the disc drive make a sound and the HDD spinning and the light on the front glowed dimly. The battery is fully charged and I have tried booting while plugged in to the power adapter as well as just off the battery. I also tried holding down the control key, command key and power key to restart it after I turned it on. Additionally I reset the PRAM and the SMC. I did notice, however, that either after making an attempt to restart using ctrl, cmnd, pwr or after I reset the PRAM it made the the apple start up sound, but nothing further, the grey screen did not appear, it just remained black.

I guess I should add that my MBP has 2gigs of RAM, 2.4g Core 2 Duo, and a 180gig HDD. I don't have any additional hardware connected to it, and all components are stock including the RAM.

If anyone has any advice, suggestions, experience with this issue, or a solution to my problem it would be greatly appreciated.
 
Okay, so I started to fool around with it some more after letting it sit for a while. I hit the volume keys and it made the increase/ decrease volume sound. So it turn out it was booting without me realizing. I then hooked up my desktops display to it and no dice. So I'm thinking its a video card issue and not the display. Can anyone correct me if I'm wrong?
 
Sounds like the symptoms my mbp showed. Closed the lid, went across town and opened it, just a black screen. It booted up and I could log in etc but the screen was not showing anything. Turned out that they had to replace the whole logicboard.
 
1200$ or there about, the warranty covered it. I'm from europe though, so the price is obviously much more expensive than it would be in the US. Original price for the machine was about 2100$ with a student discount.
 
Thanks guys I really appreciate it. Took it in and they are replacing it for free after some talking. To be honest I think I would have had to pay for it if it wasn't for you mentioning that felix. The guy in the store didn't even mention it until I brought it up. Again, much thanks.

No problem. I'm actually noticing some horizontal tearing when I scroll. I believe this is one of the symptoms that warrant a replacement, so I'm in a similar boat.

You ought to see if they'll let you buy Applecare for the laptop, it really is worth it.

I don't think this specific issue can really be pinned on Apple, the problem is related to defective nVidia 8600m chips. Dell and HP had the same problems with the nVidia GPUs.
