MAC Addresses

Here at my college, in order to use the wired ethernet to access the net in our dorm rooms, I need to give them the MAC address off of my PC so they can enter it into some sort of database. I'm wondering if I can buy a router, and give the MAC address of the router instead of my PC. This way I would be able to plug whatever I want into the router and not have to give them the MAC address for each individual device (i.e. X-Box, PS2, PSP, laptop, etc.). Do you guys follow me? Would that be possible?

Thanks in advance,
-=rlich=-

Yes it would. In my school however, a router is not allowed, so I cannot do it. You've got 2 options here...

1) Go for it, play dumb if you get caught
2) Check up on the rules first, and avoid trouble if you would be breaking them

Yeah no one has said that it isn't allowed, so I'm assuming I shouldn't have a problem with it. I'm sure they wouldn't care. Is there any way they can find out I'm using one besides actually looking in my room and seeing it?

I don't know technical specifics, but I'm sure they woudl have a way to sniff it out over the network. I was told over the phone straight up "If we catch you using a router in your room, we will track you down and revoke your internet access". Nice guy eh?

i say f it and do it..

if u catch me, then i wasnt smart enough, and i doubt theyll catch you.

setup a pc as a router, smoothwall or whatever...or just use the router, and play dumb. but f em man

Most routers support MAC spoofing. give them your PC MAc address then config the router with it.

Yes there are ways to do it without seeing the device.

What I would do is set up the router, clone the MAC address and then plug all you want into the router. This sounds very similar to setting up a home network on a cable connection. I know here that Comcast doesnt want you to create a home network as they want to sell you another IP. I know the school isnt concerned with selling additional IP's but like the others have said, I say fuck it and do it anyway. You could always play dumb.... :D

As for this "playing dumb" crapola that has been mentioned, I'm sure the school made you sign an acceptable use policy and that they gave you a copy. Read it. You accepted its terms. "Gee, I didn't know" ain't gonna cut it when you get busted for violating its terms any more than claiming ignorance of the rules here if you post goa-tse.

Well said Lethal...

I am basing my comments on how apethetic/ignorant our IT guys were when I was in college. Forgot about the whole "legality" issues but that is deffinatly something to take into consideration.

goa-tse.....lol, horrible horrible stuff.

serbiaNem, we don't discuss circumventing school network policies here. This will be your only warning on this.

It's not circumventing network policy, it is simply stating the fact that a router takes an ip address in a similar fasion to a computer. And it isn't against network policy at all schools (or the OP's), just mine. So technically it is not against school rules. Nor is it giving instructions on how to circumvent a firewall. In fact I also mentioned a way to make his network safer by using wireless security. So I forgive you for deleting my post.

Yes something I should have mentioned in my original post which was written to hastily is. If you are going to do this their are the Pro's and Con's in your situation.

Pro's
Hardware Firewall
More than one PC

Cons
If your found they take your access away, and possibly take legal action.

I would certainly double check any agreements you signed, and request a written policy before I did any of this.

Quite frankly, I personally would run a router even if I only had one PC. Just for protection sake. While there are some very good free software firewalls and virus protection there is no substitute for having both Hardware and software protecting your PC Especially on a School network.

A lot of schools don't allow routers for the very reason people are too dumb to install them. My school routers aren't allowed but I had a friend use one for a year with no problems but he's also smart. A few times routers have been used and people have pluged them in backwards causing a whole building's network to go down due to dhcp servers handing out incorrect IP addresses.

Oh yeah if you want to get kicked off fast, hook a wireless router up and see what the network people think of that.

Ah but they solved it this year Clean Access is going to be running and it will not work behind a normal router :D Muhahhaha

p.s I work tech support there oh the hotties that come in asking for help :D

If XP couldnt he just use ICS and then put the router behind it in which it will recieve a DHCP address and use the XP machine as the router?

It is better to ask for forgiveness then apporval that is my theory .

KM ;)

That can also mean internet access revoked for the remainder of the school year since most schools I know of have an AUP as part of dorm sign up.

or you could do te responsible thing, and go ask. if you give them a valid reason and show that you will not f-up the network im sure that they will let you do it. but remember dont use your name at all when you go see them, otherwise they will hunt you down.

cheers
