M2N32 upgrade question

I have a friend with an Asus M2N32 mobo and a 3500+ processor. He recently upgraded to an 8800GT graphics card and 3 gigs of RAM. PSU is 620 Enermax Liberty.

I was wondering if it would be possible for him to upgrade to a phenom with a BIOS flash. If not, I was thinking a 6000+ X2 or 6400+ would be the next best option, but since I've been using core 2 duo for the last year I've kinda fallen behind on AMD tech. Any suggestions or BTDT is greatly appreciated! I apologize if this is a dumb question :p.
