M1015's and Sas expanders - again

Hey Guys Probably posted before, but

I have an M1015 IBM Raidcard, and am interested in wiring it into a sas expander.
How many drives am I supposed to hang off it in Raid0? Site says 64 Non-raid or "16 per volume on Raid 0"

Does this mean I can make arrays with only max 16 HDD's per each one? or 16 total supported on the sas expander completely in Raid0?

How many drives in literal terms can I hang off this card through a sas expander on multiple Raid0s? (ignoring my sas expander model decision)

16 is a lot of drives for a Raid0, in fact I have only done that once (as an intermediary array) for a particular need where a drive failure (in this case an entire volume failure) wouldn't be a horrible calamity. With the 9240/M1015 yes you are limited to 16 drives per volume for RAID0. As for the maximum number of drives per M1015 HBA + expander, I believe that one has a max limit of 64. Some more advanced SAS controllers such as the Areca 1x80/82 support a maximum of 128 drives per HBA+Expander(s).

Theoretically, you could have 4 16 drive R0's off that HBA/Expander(s)OfYourChoice combos for a total of 64 drives. As a thought exercise that is fine. If you are actually thinking about doing that, I would suggest away from the M1015 and towards an Areca 1882 for performance and stability reasons. In the grand scheme of things, the couple of hundred dollars more you will spend for the single areca 1882ix-12 vs 2 M1015's will be a drop in the bucket when you factor in 64 drives, the HBA and 2-3 expanders (depending on brand/model)
