:D For anyone using these 'obsolete beasts'..... The 2.8c topped out at 248 fsb on a PAT enabled, use for anything basis - but the 2.4c will easily hit 270, maybe more.

The 2.8 will do about 21,600 in 3d01se with a 9800Pro AIW, haven't had the 2.4 in there long enough to really tweak it.

RAM is the 'LC' revision of the G.Skill TCCD, using 2x512 sticks at 1:1 ratio, 2.5-3-3-7 1t timings with a burst length of 8.

Will swap the 865PE Neo2-PFISR out with an IC7-MAX3 tonight & do some further comparison/testing.

It should. I hit about 2000 less with a 9800pro and a p4 @ around 3Ghz. His 2.8 at 248 would be close to 3.5ghz.

Well i must have something seriosly wrong because 21.5K is about my top with a 3.2 @ 4 and an OC'd 6600gt.

Just the same, i don't believe he hit 21.6k with a 9800 and a 2.8c. A screeny would shut me up.
 
well i gotta 2500+ mobile @ 2.6ghz w/9800 pro @ 380/447. my score is undetermined. :D

2001 depends on memory timings, FSB, a whole bunch of OS tweaks. It's possible he has that kind of score.
 
pigpen, i was able to get almost 16000 out of an 845 chipset with a 2.0 at 150mhz fsb with a 9500pro.
Single channel memory, 128 bit bus on the video card, low fsb.
now throw in dual channel, faster FSB and much faster video card, not hard to imagine 20k +.
 
Those scores are in the Futuremark ORB, and I will post here when I get more RAM on Monday or possibly this weekend if I feel up to running a crippled single channel machine to get the screenshots off of the hdd > Last night one of my G.Skill GBLC sticks laid down at 280fsb and 2.5-3-3-7 timings with the 2.4c. They always run great right before they die... :(

On a good note, G.Skill already responded & said they will replace both sticks immediately. I never ran them above 2.65VDIMM so obviously it was a bad stick.

Is there something wrong with my P4 2.26C? It locks up at 2.5 Ghz and is still unstable at 2.4 GHz. I'm using stock cooling. Will a high-performance heatsink and fan help it? My temps seem fine as is though.. (btw I am only changing the FSB speed [default 133 Mhz], should I be changing the voltage as well? Or maybe something else?)

Your processor isn't a 2.26C... the C indicates 800FSB and HT enabled. Neither of which your processor has.

Also you probably have a C1 stepping chip. Which you're lucky if they hit 3Ghz. Most would hit 2.5Ghz - 3Ghz (on air)... you just happen to be on the shitty end of the range.

The D1 stepping came out with the 800Mhz FSB "C" processors. And is a great stepping to have. Most hit 3.2-3.4Ghz (on air)..... with good ones doing 3.6Ghz (like mine! :))

The M0's came out last and SUPPOSEDLY are rejected EE's but its kinda hard to believe they had that many rejected EE's.

What mobo are you on etc? Maybe there's other factors. ram, mobo, agp/pci bus not locked, maybe the chip needs more voltage, etc.

opps, yes you're right, it's a 2.26B, not C.

how can i tell what stepping chip i have? my revision according to CPU-Z is B0.

im running it on a shitty MSI Max-648 motherboard (SiS 648 chipset) (why did i buy it?).
RAM is Kingston ValueRAM PC2700 (2.5 3 2 7 <--- are those speeds good?).
everything right now is default, and everything else was default when i changed the FSB - i never tried changing voltage or memory timings because i dont know what to do. so the voltage is at 1.456 V.
btw, in my mobo BIOS i have a choice of either choosing 1T, 2T, or BY SPD. i heard 1T is better, should i choose that?
 
The M0 is nice. I had a 2.4c M0 SL6Z3 from Costa Rica for a while. That baby did 3.7ghz.
 
I love my s478 processors.

I've got a 3.4C, 3.2E CO, 3.2E DO and love 'em all!

On phase change, I'm running into motherboard issues (to be resolved soon).

The 3.4C goes up to 4.45 with ease (yay northwood!)

The 3.2E CO goes up to 4.15 (~260fsb wall on Max3 and P4C800-E) with some voltage help

The 3.2E DO goes up to 4.15 (~260fsb wall on Max3 and P4C800-E) on stock voltage!!!

My 3.4C used to do 3.8 all day long on my old koolance.

As much as I'd like to see my northwood become the champ of my mini-shootout, I think this DO of mine is going to hit 5ghz or come damn close.

s478 for ever!!! (or at least until I find something better)
 
how would a 2.8E do with respect to overclocking? i have one of those and it runs terribly hot.

And thats why you're limited to 2.5Ghz.

I think my 1.6a was a B0 stepping and it topped off around 2.5Ghz.

I had a SIS 645 mobo (ASUS P4S333), but it wasn't that bad. But Intel's motherboards are SO MUCH better!

You could do 1 of 2 things to upgrade:

1. get a nice shiney new 3.06Ghz processor, it will make your rig really fast and give you Hyper threading. (since your mobo doesn't support 800FSB or "C" processors. = about $245 (very easy)

2. get a new mobo and processor:
Pentium 4, 520. 2.8Ghz with HT $160 & Abit AS8 $88 = total about $248 (harder + reinstall windows)
 
Naa, actually I'm already going to buy some new parts in a few weeks... DFI LanParty Ultra-D mobo with Athlon64 3200+ (Venice) processor and an X800XL video card.
I was just wanted to mess around with my current computer for fun, just to see what I could get out of it.

If the 1.6A with B0 stepping topped out at 2.5 GHz, shouldn't my 2.26B have no problem getting there? Or is it already like an overclocked 1.6A. Because it can't even run stable at 2.4.. crashed at 2.5.

Just luck of the draw. Somehow I've been very lucky and almost all of my processors have gotten like 50% OC's. But I have been buying the low end of good steppings.
Like:
my P3 700e that did 1050Mhz
My 1.6a that I used to run at 2.4Ghz (mobo limited on a P4S333)
my 2.4C that I ran at 3.6Ghz

I remember when the 2.26's came out, a lot of people had good luck with them and got close to 3Ghz +-, which was great at the time.

I think you just got a bad one, period.

You'll be happy with that combo you're getting, should be the base of a great system.
 
While we're on this subject, is it true that as time goes by and the manufacturing process of a processor gets more refined, it ends up overclocking better than the same processor from the day of release?

Yes.

Like a lot of the 533FSB chips were switched over to the D1 stepping later in the life cycle, and those chips overclocked much better than the earlier B0 & C1 steppings.
ex: 2.4B, 2.66B, 2.8B, & 3.06 HT's.
 
sweet 3.4clock there... Just for the heck of it I put some Kingmax cas2.5 ddr400 in there while I wait for RMA and the 2.4 did 20.5k in 3d01 and 51,900range in AQ3. Too bad this stuff has to run at 5:4 (flakes out above 221FSB).

At least this will hold me over ok until I can game on a 3500.
