M0 stepping on E4500, good overclock ?

okay guys, before i was happy my E4500 reach 3.15 oc with 1.465v and aftermarket air cooling, prime heats it up to 67 C but that's all about it, no real world app/games proved to be as hot as when running prime, instead my E4500 stays well under 55 C.

but when reading pages (on internet :eek:) about m0 stepping, a lot of users reporting to reach 3.0 - 3.3 with def vcore, i tried this before since it was an easy 300x11 and pc wouldn't even boot with anything under 1.58v, let alone prime stable.

maybe i need some tweak on my bios? i tried to disable speedstep etc but it still didn't work for me.

any help and opinion?

Every chip is different, there is no gurantee you can overclock to certain speed at certain voltage. When the chip doesn't overclock well, most people just sell it on ebay and buy another one .
 
Why are you trying to boot at 300fsb?The common divider for that combo is 320fsb. every other setting would want to overclock the ram, stress the cpu and the mobo.
I had my E4300 set at 320fsb, DDR2-800 set at 4-4-4-12 , vcore + .05 (in bios) and everything was rock solid. Checking vcore with cpuz netted me 1.325 as vdroop- right where it should be.

P5b-plus, E4300, 1gb corsair, 80gb wd hd.

 
no, i believe i didn't stressed my ram at all, i'm using 1:1 ratio so that my ram runs below spec (ddr600). fyi this chip has 11x.
 
I got my E4500 M0 the other day. So far 233 at stock is good...however jumping to 266 takes at least 1.25V...so yeah I am in the same boat as you. Waiting for my arctic cooler 7 to make that jump to 266

i think its time for you to start lapping your CPU and Heatsink :)
 
I got my E4500 M0 the other day. So far 233 at stock is good...however jumping to 266 takes at least 1.25V...so yeah I am in the same boat as you. Waiting for my arctic cooler 7 to make that jump to 266

1.25? i thought e4500 stock vcore was 1.325, am i wrong or did you do some undervolt?
 
im not a OC guru, but my E4500 topped out @ 3Ghz. :(

what vcore did you use for that 3Ghz? is that prime stable ?

Stock voltage may differ between chips. The VID lits the stock voltage for that particular chip. 1.35v is the max stock voltage for any Core2, IIRC.
 
it is possible that it's getting too hot, make sure you are getting good contact between your cpu and your heatsink, ^^

if you're running the stock heatsink well thats probably the issue
 
i believe that's your def vcore when speedstep enabled, effectively reducing your multiplier to 6x iirc and your def vcore from 1.325 to 1.1875.

vcore 1.35v, sold this chip already.
no matter the voltage it wont pass 3ghz.

imo, most Celeron 4XX, E4XXX hit fsb wall aroud 380-400.

no one answered, b/c the answer is easy.

Not all chips are created equal.

I'll say it for the 900th time. Overclocking is luck of the draw.

Some OC like champs, some are duds. Yours is probably slightly below average. But thats why its a called an average.... some are higher, some are lower!!

You can try some other ratios, FSB's & multipliers to see if that helps. Some motherboards can be finicky at certain FSB's.

Like my mother board behaved best at 1mhz higher than the stock FSB settings, ie: where the new FSB strap would kick in & it would be easier on the NB which is what I think could have been limiting my OC, since I had an early DS3 v1.0 My chip is most stable at 9x334 = 3Ghz, or 8x400 = 3.2Ghz
Try those multipliers & clocks.

Well first night with the new arctic cooler...running at 1.3V...idle is around 40C

i'm running 320x10 with 1.45v now, stable for more than 2 hours of prime95 v254.
66 is the highest on both core, idle was 29.

i'll wait your next result now, thanks.
 
When I had an E4300, it topped out at 3GHz on stock volts. Going even to 3.1GHz required an insane amount of voltage, I think +.05V or +.06V, it was almost exponential after that point. Anyway, ~3.0GHz might be the stable limit of the silicon for that series.

I have also taken an E4500 to (320x10) This was not the max for either chip but just what I stuck with because they were not my systems and I didnt want them coming back to me with issues. These both did this at ~1.375V. The E4400 was on a DS3R and the E4500 was on an IP35-E.

Not much of a tweak really. Just turn off all the temp control. Set your ram voltage what it should be and set your settings to 10x320.... try this at 1.4V then back it down to its lowest stable voltage and watch your heat. Make sure you adjust your ram devider so your not overclocking the memory to high. Ive overclocked probably 5 or 6 of these new intels and its been easy and ive always reached a decent OC.
 
Remember that overclocking is always hit or miss, if you get a good chip, you can really crank it. Also, people's definition of stable also differs. I go for 24 hours of prime, but some might be comfortable with less.

I guess i might be kind of lucky with my E4500, for my chip 3.2 is the sweet spot, I've gone up to 3.4 but it takes an insane amount of voltage, at the moment, I'm at 3.2 GHz (291x11). My temps usually idle around 27 C and under load hit 47 C, and my house is kinda warm (i live in florida)
 
My C2D E4500 (M0 Stepping) has a VID of 1.325V. I'm currently running it at 2.8 GHz (255 x 11 and 1.45V) and 850 MHz FSB (2-2-2 12 2T memory timings and 2.2V). It's completely stable at those settings for a 24/7 overclock.

The strange thing about this particular processor is how it will not budge unless I give it 1.45V at which point 2.8 GHz is it's max. Push it to 2.9 GHz with 1.45V and instability ensues. It requires another .05V (1.5V) to make 2.9 GHz stable and it will not go any further. I have not tried it past 1.5V and I do not attend to.

mine hit 45 under load but not with intel stock cooler.

mine has the same vid of 1.325v, i believe the good one has 1.305v and below. i've heard that there's 1.2+v . however, 3.2 with 1.45v proved to be prime stable in my case, still hoping for more though.

low to mid 3's is the norm for m0's. some need up to 1.5v. some can do it near stock. it's all normal for this breed. most do require voltage though so don't worry.

i think 11x300 (3300) is better than 8x400 (3200), considering 100Mhz advantage.
as for higher fsb means higher perfomance, i'm not quite agree with that, the only difference i saw was sandra mem bandwidth benchmark.
i'm talking about 320x10 vs 291x11 and i saw no increased score on 3dmark (all 2003, 2005 and 2006) except for a small 10-20 points fluctuation which is normal. so let alone increased fps on any games i've played (i don't play sisoft sandra memory bandwidth benchmark).
i just think 320x10 is a better number than 291x11 and accidentally it fits right with memory divider to get my PC6400 runs at default speed and timings.
 
You're right faster FSB doesn't always mean faster system.

But your motherboard should have no problem hitting 400 FSB.

Before when you tested you only dropped one multi from 11 to 10.

I'm talking about dropping 2 more to 8x and going for a stock FSB (400). So the FSB goes up another whole 80Mhz (x 4 quad pumped). Also, at "stock" FSB's things generally work better.

266, 333, 400 being "stock" FSB's Like if you could get 10x333 to work that might work better also.

And at 8x400 your memory would be at stock again, using 1:1 ratio.

So you have a few advantages of trying that combo.

1. much faster FSB = lower latency
2. high FSB = better memory scores
3. at certain stock FSB's latencies are minimized, b/c NB strap is set perfectly. (so shoot for 333 or 400)
 
my mobo failed to do that 400x8, and i'm not sure which voltage(s) needs to be raised.
also, would it be good if i add some voltage to northbridge and/or southbridge considering this board (abit IP35-E) only has passive cooler on both bridge and no pipe like IP35 vanilla or Pro.

i guess this has been too long now, i'm going to give up to 3.2Ghz for daily use.
 
I used to run mine at 8x401, but it took a lot of extra juice to get it over 3Ghz, and I didn't like how everything read the CPU speed incorrectly when I didn't run it at its default multiplier. So after a few months I dropped it down to 9x333 (3Ghz) which it does at a much lower voltage and cooler temp. Core 2's are so fast, anything close to 3Ghz is fast enough for 99% of people.

Oh and on the voltage, at first I had left things on Auto which was actually bad. On my Gigabyte DS3, when left to Auto and overclocked the BIOS was jacking up the voltages on everything a lot more than necessary. So I manually set the voltages and things actually were more stable and cooler that way.
 
hm...i tried 401 as well but it was no good, should i raised northbridge voltage or southbridge or even both?

you're right about everything read my speed wrong except cpu-z, it's annoying to read my speed as 3.52, my guess is 320x11 for being default multiplier for E4500 instead 320x10 setup. since i'd really love to have that 3.52 for real, that's the kind of overclock which i hoped before i purchased this chip.
 
Those chips dont like the fsb much over 350mhz or so. Ive done 10x320 completely stable but then try 8x400 and its a no go.
