M-Audio AV40s + Subwoofer?

Not sure if this is possible or not.

Is there some way to add a subwoofer to an M-Audio AV40 setup while still retaining the volume control/headphone port?
 
Damn. Oh well, guess I won't be getting a sub until I have a bunch of money to spend on a 2.1 setup.
 
Well... You could get a receiver with 6 channel preout, set the AV40's on the front two pre-outs and then hook up a subwoofer to the subwoofer pre out. You can find a receiver with 6 channel pre out for less than $50 on craigslist.

There's one of these on Craigslist nearby for fairly cheap.

If I were to hook the left speaker up to "speaker in", then to "speaker out", and then to the right speaker, would this possibly work?

The sub wouldn't receive any input from the left channel, but aren't the frequencies it uses mono in the first place?
